Sekhukhune United coach Papi Zothwane has stressed the importance of defensive discipline as the club looks to compete for trophies this season, insisting that conceding fewer goals will be crucial to achieving their ambitions.
The Babina Noko coach believes that a strong defence can make a significant difference in the team's pursuit of success, especially when facing opponents with technically gifted players.
Zothwane explained that winning matches and competing for championships requires more than scoring goals. According to him, teams must also learn how to protect their leads, remain organised and avoid conceding unnecessarily.
"You win matches, and you win championships by not conceding a lot of goals," Zothwane said.
His comments highlight an area Sekhukhune United are determined to improve as they continue their campaign in South African football.
Although the coach indicated that the team has already worked on its defensive structure, he believes the players must maintain their concentration throughout matches, particularly when fatigue begins to affect their performance.
"We have to work on that. We have worked on our defensive structure, but we just have to stay in the game even when we are tired," he explained.
Zothwane also pointed out that Sekhukhune United cannot afford to lose focus against opponents who possess the technical ability to punish defensive mistakes.
"We need to stay focused because some of the teams we play against have technically gifted players," he added.
For Sekhukhune United, maintaining defensive discipline will require every player to understand their responsibilities, communicate effectively and work together when the opposition is attacking.
Defending is not only the responsibility of the goalkeeper and defenders. Midfielders and forwards must also contribute by pressing opponents, tracking runners and helping the team regain possession.
When players become tired, concentration can drop, leaving spaces for opponents to exploit. Zothwane's message suggests that maintaining organisation during these difficult periods will be an important part of the team's preparations.
Sekhukhune United will therefore need to combine their attacking ambitions with greater defensive consistency if they are to challenge for honours.
The coach's emphasis on preventing goals reflects his belief that a well-organised defence provides a solid foundation for success.
As the season progresses, supporters will be eager to see whether the improvements Zothwane has called for translate into more consistent performances and positive results.
For Babina Noko, the objective is clear: remain focused, defend as a unit and give themselves a stronger chance of competing for trophies this season.
