Former Orlando Pirates development coach Joseph Makhanya has returned to the spotlight following his departure from Pele Pele FC, the club's ABC Motsepe League feeder team. Makhanya, widely known by his nickname Duku Duku, joined the feeder side in September 2025 after previously working with the club's DStv Diski Challenge reserve team. His move to Pele Pele FC was intended to help the team fight for promotion while continuing his work with young talent, but that chapter has now concluded.
During his time within the Pirates development structures, Makhanya earned a strong reputation for identifying and shaping promising players. Several graduates who came through his teams, including Relebohile Mofokeng, Mohau Nkota, and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, have successfully transitioned to the senior level and made significant impacts. Makhanya has frequently stressed that youth coaching should focus on preparing players for professional football rather than just chasing immediate results.
His recent insights into young talent highlight the lasting influence of his work. In October 2026, he spoke about Pirates midfielder Simphiwe Masilela, pointing out that the youngster's versatility was already noticeable during his early development years. This ability to spot potential has been a central theme of Makhanya's coaching career.
Makhanya was not the only former Orlando Pirates player to leave Pele Pele FC. Former midfielder Issa Sarr, who worked alongside him as an assistant coach, has also departed the team. Following these exits, Orlando Pirates adjusted their coaching setup, with Vincent Rammoni stepping in to lead the ABC Motsepe League side for the 2026 and 2027 season.
As football followers await his next move, attention remains focused on what the future holds for Makhanya.Given his background as a former professional player and his proven track record in youth development, he remains a notable figure in South African football. Whether he chooses to return to academy coaching or pursue a different path in the sport, his contributions to nurturing the country's rising talent continue to be recognised by supporters and observers alike.
