Former Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has received major recognition in Major League Soccer after being named the fourth-best player under the age of 22 in the league's 2026 rankings.
The 21-year-old defender, who plays for Chicago Fire FC, was included in the MLS 22 Under 22 class of 2026, which recognises some of the most promising young talents in the competition. Mbokazi finished fourth overall and was the highest-ranked defender on the list.
The achievement highlights the progress he has made since moving from Orlando Pirates to Chicago Fire. His performances in the United States have attracted attention, with the young South African quickly establishing himself as an important member of his new team.
According to a statement released by Chicago Fire, Mbokazi's fourth-place finish marked the fifth time a player from the club had been ranked among the top five in the prestigious MLS selection.
The 2026 list features players from 16 clubs, with an average age of approximately 20 years. It highlights young footballers who are making an impact in the league and could become important figures in the future.
Mbokazi has also stood out because of his experience at international level. According to Chicago Fire, he leads the selected players with 15 senior national team appearances. His international experience includes four appearances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Despite being only 21, the defender has already played an important role for Chicago Fire during his first season in the MLS. He has made 19 appearances across all competitions in 2026, starting 17 of those matches.
However, his progress was interrupted by an injury that forced him to miss several matches following the World Cup. He eventually returned to action in Chicago Fire's 1-0 victory over Charlotte FC on September 26, playing 80 minutes in the match.
Mbokazi then continued his return to full fitness by completing 90 minutes in each of his next four matches. His ability to return to regular action has been important as he continues to adapt to football in the United States.
His reputation has also grown beyond the MLS rankings. The International Centre for Sports Studies has reportedly valued Mbokazi higher than any other player in the league, underlining his rising status in the international game.
For the former Orlando Pirates defender, the latest recognition represents another significant milestone in a career that has progressed quickly. His performances in Chicago have placed him among the league's leading young players, while his experience with Bafana Bafana has further strengthened his profile.
Mbokazi will now aim to maintain his performances, continue developing his defensive game and help Chicago Fire achieve its objectives for the remainder of the season.
