Nigeria Coach Eric Chelle Comments on South Africa's Possible Points Deduction

Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, has addressed the potential ramifications of South Africa’s controversial use of midfielder Teboho Mokoena in their recent match against Lesotho. Mokoena, who was supposed to be serving a suspension, played in the match, and now Bafana Bafana may face a points deduction if the incident is deemed a violation of regulations

Speaking on the matter, Chelle pointed out that if South Africa were penalized, Nigeria could benefit in the standings, with a chance to surpass the South African team in the race for qualification. “Maybe if South Africa drops three points, the next game is against Rwanda, so we can pass this team. After that, we have a game against South Africa, and that could give us an advantage,” Chelle said.

The coach expressed cautious optimism, acknowledging that while the potential points deduction could shift the group dynamics, Nigeria must focus on their own performance. “We can’t rely solely on others’ mistakes,” Chelle added. “Our focus is on preparing for each match and ensuring we do everything we can to qualify.”

The controversy stems from the fact that Mokoena had accumulated an accumulation of yellow cards, which should have led to a suspension. South Africa’s decision to field him has since sparked debate, with calls for the South African Football Association (SAFA) to clarify their position.

As the group stage continues, Nigeria's upcoming fixtures remain crucial. The team is poised to make the most of any slip-ups by their rivals as they continue their pursuit of qualification for the upcoming tournament.
