Mamelodi Sundowns have officially confirmed the signing of highly rated South African midfielder Lazola Maku, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over the teenager’s next move.
The Tshwane giants announced the arrival of the 19-year-old on Tuesday morning through their official X account, welcoming the promising midfielder to the club.
“Mamelodi Sundowns are pleased to announce the signing of Lazola Maku! Yellow Nation, let's give the youngster a proper welcome,” the club stated.
Maku joins Sundowns as a free agent after his contract with Siwelele FC expired at the end of last season. His availability allowed the reigning South African giants to secure his services without paying a transfer fee, while also adding another promising youngster to their squad.
Before settling on a move to Chloorkop, Maku reportedly attracted interest from abroad and went on trial at several clubs in Austria. Despite exploring opportunities outside South Africa, the midfielder ultimately chose to continue his development with one of the country's biggest clubs.
His move to Sundowns follows an impressive rise through the youth ranks. Maku began his football development at Ubuntu Academy before joining SuperSport United, where he continued to build his reputation as a talented midfielder.
He has also represented South Africa at junior international level. Maku captained Amajita at the recent COSAFA Under-20 Cup in Mozambique, helping the team claim the tournament title under coach Raymond Mdaka. He was also part of the South African side that won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Under-20 title in Egypt.
However, competition for places at Sundowns will be fierce. The club boasts a squad packed with experienced and established players, meaning Maku will need to work hard to earn regular opportunities under head coach Miguel Cardoso.
Sundowns have already enjoyed success this season, winning the MTN8 and FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup. Maku will now look to adapt quickly, learn from his experienced teammates and prove that he can make the step up to senior football.
The signing gives Sundowns another exciting young prospect, with Maku’s development likely to be closely watched as he begins his new chapter at Chloorkop.
