Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has expressed confidence in his squad ahead of their decisive CAF Champions League clash against African Stars, reminding his players of the expectations that accompany representing one of Africa’s most prominent football clubs.
The Buccaneers are scheduled to welcome the Namibian champions to Orlando Amstel Arena on Friday, 23 October 2026, with qualification for the next stage of the continental competition within reach. Pirates enter the second leg with a 1-0 aggregate advantage after winning the opening encounter in Botswana last weekend.
Speaking before the match, Ouaddou emphasised the significance of reaching the CAF Champions League group stage, explaining that the objective matters greatly to the club’s management, supporters and players. He believes his squad understands what is required to deliver the necessary result.
“Pirates is a giant of Africa, the fans, stakeholders, club are waiting for us to be in this competition, the players are ready and understand what's needed,” the coach said.
The statement reflects the pressure facing Pirates as they attempt to secure their place among the teams competing in Africa’s premier club tournament. The Soweto giants will be determined to meet those expectations and avoid another disappointing outcome during the preliminary rounds.
Last season, Pirates suffered an early elimination at the hands of DR Congo’s Saint-Eloi Lupopo at the same stage of the competition. Despite their efforts to recover in the return fixture, the Buccaneers were unable to advance, leaving the club eager to produce a different outcome this time.
That previous disappointment has increased the importance of the upcoming encounter. Progressing to the group stage would represent a significant achievement for Ouaddou and his players while strengthening the club’s ambitions on the continental stage.
Nevertheless, the Pirates coach will understand that their first-leg advantage does not guarantee qualification. African Stars remain capable of challenging the South African side, meaning the hosts must avoid complacency throughout the encounter.
Pirates will need to combine defensive organisation with effective attacking play, ensuring they manage the game intelligently while capitalising on opportunities in front of goal. Maintaining concentration for the entire match will be essential to protecting their advantage.
Playing at home could also provide a valuable boost, with the Buccaneers faithful expected to encourage the team during this important fixture.
Ouaddou’s message reinforces the responsibility attached to wearing the Pirates shirt. The club’s reputation and continental ambitions demand consistent performances, particularly in matches that determine progress in major competitions.
With a narrow lead to defend, Pirates have an opportunity to take another step towards the CAF Champions League group stage. Their immediate challenge is to finish the job against African Stars and give their supporters renewed confidence in the team’s ability to compete against Africa’s best clubs.
