Veteran coach Augusto Palacios has urged Mamelodi Sundowns to carefully look into Monnapule Saleng’s mental health before taking further steps with the player. Palacios, who has years of experience in South African football, said coaches must first understand the root of the problem.
Saleng, the 28-year-old winger, joined Sundowns from Orlando Pirates as a big signing. Early in the 2025/26 season he failed to attend training camp several times. Coach Miguel Cardoso said this broke the club’s rules. To keep the squad united, Sundowns kept him away from the group for a while. He has since returned to training and is trying to work his way back into the team.
His agent, Karabo Mathang-Tshabuse, earlier told radio listeners that Saleng has been dealing with mental health challenges. Help was sought, but progress depends on Saleng accepting the support. The club has not given full details of his condition.
Palacios explained that mental health issues in football can come from different places. A player may struggle because of an injury, family problems, pressure from the game, or even personal habits such as drinking or drugs. “It is important that, as a coach, you first investigate what type of mental health problem he has and whether it involves soccer or his private life,” he said. Once the cause is clear, the club can decide whether Saleng needs a specialist doctor or a psychologist.
Sundowns face a busy period. They have the return leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary-round tie against Angola’s Wiliete SC this Friday. There is also a Carling Knockout match against Marumo Gallants and a Betway Premiership fixture against Durban City. It is still unclear whether Cardoso will give Saleng any minutes in these games.
Supporters have watched Saleng closely since his arrival. He showed his quality in the recent MTN8 final, where Sundowns lifted the trophy. Many hope the club handles his situation with care so that he can return to his best form. Palacios’ advice is a reminder that clubs should gather the full picture before making decisions about players who face mental health challenges. Sundowns have not yet said how they plan to respond to the comments.
