Siwelele bag first win with late strike against Polokwane

Siwelele FC finally got their first Betway Premiership points of the season after beating Polokwane City 1-0 at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Sunday afternoon. The win ended a long wait for the Free State side, who had gone seven matches without a victory before this clash.

The match stayed tight for most of the afternoon. Both teams created chances, but neither could break the deadlock in the first half. Polokwane goalkeeper Masuluke made a good save to keep out a Mazibuko effort, while Siwelele also went close through Saile. At half-time the score remained 0-0.

Siwelele continued to push after the break and controlled more of the ball. They finished the game with 66 percent possession and had 10 shots to Polokwane’s five. Polokwane made several changes in the second half as they tried to find a way into the game, but they struggled to create clear openings.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the closing minutes. In the 90th minute, Tebogo Potsane set up Michel N’Guessan, who finished calmly into the bottom corner to give Siwelele the lead. The goal sparked celebrations among the home supporters who had waited patiently for their team’s first league win.

For Siwelele, the result is an important step. The club bought SuperSport United’s Premiership licence and entered the top flight aiming to bring professional football back to the Free State after previous local sides left the division. They use venues across the province, including stadiums in Bloemfontein and Bethlehem, as they try to rebuild support in the region.

The three points move them off the bottom of the early log and give the squad belief after a difficult start. Polokwane City, who had mixed results of their own, will look to bounce back in their next fixture.

Siwelele’s players and technical staff can take confidence from the late reward. While the season is still young, this win shows the team can stay patient and find a way when it matters. The next matches will test whether they can build on this result and climb further up the table.
