Orlando Pirates legend Johnny “Black Sunday” Masegela is not fully convinced that the Buccaneers have what it takes to win the CAF Champions League this season, raising questions about their ability to compete for Africa’s biggest club football prize.
Pirates are one of South Africa’s most prominent football clubs, with a rich history and a passionate fan base that expects the team to compete at the highest level. Their continental ambitions have also attracted attention as supporters hope to see the Soweto giants make a serious push for the prestigious trophy.
However, Masegela’s assessment suggests that the club still has work to do before it can be considered a strong contender for the title.
Winning the CAF Champions League requires more than domestic success. Teams must demonstrate consistency over several rounds, handle difficult away fixtures and perform under pressure against some of the continent’s strongest sides.
For Pirates, the challenge is to show that they possess the quality, experience and resilience needed to navigate those demanding encounters. The competition often tests a team’s depth and tactical discipline, particularly when the schedule becomes congested and the stakes rise.
Masegela’s doubts are likely to generate debate among the club’s supporters, many of whom believe Pirates have the potential to compete with Africa’s elite. Others may share the former player’s concerns, arguing that the team must prove itself against stronger continental opposition before expectations can rise further.
The Buccaneers have built a reputation as a major force in South African football, but translating that standing into continental success remains a separate challenge.
Whether Pirates can silence their doubters will ultimately depend on their performances on the pitch. As the campaign progresses, the team will need to demonstrate that it can maintain its level against different styles of play and deliver when it matters most.
For now, Masegela remains unconvinced, leaving Pirates with a clear challenge: prove that they have what it takes to go all the way in Africa.
