CAPE TOWN CITY'S WINNING STREAK COMES TO AN END AFTER DRAMATIC DRAW AGAINST UPINGTON CITY.

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA — 7 NOVEMBER 2026

Cape Town City suffered a setback in their push for promotion after their winning run in the Motsepe Foundation Championship came to an end following a 1-1 draw against Upington City on Saturday afternoon.

The two sides met at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium, where Upington City produced a determined performance to deny the Citizens another victory in what proved to be a competitive league encounter.

Cape Town City entered the match hoping to extend their impressive run of results and maintain the momentum they had built in recent fixtures. However, Upington City had other plans, showing resilience and determination to ensure that the visitors did not leave with all three points.

The result means Cape Town City's winning streak has officially been halted, although the draw gives them another opportunity to regroup and focus on their next assignment.

For a club with ambitions of returning to the highest level of South African football, consistency remains extremely important. Every point matters in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, particularly in a competition where the battle for promotion can become increasingly difficult as the season progresses.

Upington City, meanwhile, will take encouragement from their performance against one of the division's ambitious sides. Holding Cape Town City to a draw represents a positive result, especially considering the visitors' recent winning form.

The outcome also highlights the unpredictable nature of the Championship, where teams cannot afford to underestimate their opponents regardless of their position or recent results.

Cape Town City will now be expected to respond positively when they return to action. While ending their winning run is undoubtedly disappointing, the draw does not necessarily derail their broader objectives for the campaign.

Their immediate challenge will be to rediscover the winning formula, improve their performance and ensure that valuable points are not dropped unnecessarily.

Saturday's encounter formed part of a busy day of Motsepe Foundation Championship action, with several teams continuing their respective battles for points, positioning and promotion.

For the Citizens, the message is clear: the winning streak may be over, but their promotion ambitions remain alive. The focus will now shift towards their next fixture and an opportunity to get back to winning ways.
