Orlando Pirates Coach Reveals Surprising Reason Behind Oswin Appollis’ Reduced Game Time
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has finally addressed growing questions surrounding Oswin Appollis’ reduced playing time, insisting that the club’s decision to limit the attacker’s involvement is motivated by player welfare rather than any concerns about his performances.
The Bafana Bafana international has recently found himself spending more time on the substitutes’ bench, a development that has sparked speculation among supporters, particularly considering his importance to the Buccaneers during their successful previous campaign.
However, Ouaddou has moved to dismiss suggestions of any underlying problems involving the talented attacker, explaining that Pirates are deliberately managing his workload to preserve his fitness for crucial fixtures later in the season.
Speaking after Orlando Pirates secured a 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in their Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final on Saturday, the Moroccan tactician used Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi as an example to explain the club's approach.
Ouaddou pointed out that even leading European clubs carefully manage their important players to minimise injury risks and maintain their availability throughout demanding campaigns.
"I already explained the situation of Appollis. You see, in Paris Saint-Germain now, Luis Enrique said that he's going to play [Achraf] Hakimi in January.
"Why? Because they have seen with the numbers that this guy maybe he risks injuries and they don't want to lose him. It's the same for us. There is nothing about around Appollis.
"People must stop to create any polemics. Appollis is one of our best players, and we want to protect him for the most important games," Ouaddou explained.
The coach's comments provide important clarity regarding the situation, particularly given Appollis' impressive contributions since joining Pirates from Polokwane City.
The attacker enjoyed an outstanding debut campaign, establishing himself as one of the club's influential attacking players and contributing significantly to their domestic success.
His demanding schedule, which also included international commitments with Bafana Bafana, has reportedly contributed to the decision to carefully regulate his minutes.
Meanwhile, Pirates continue competing across multiple competitions, making squad management an important consideration for Ouaddou and his technical team.
The latest explanation should reassure supporters that Appollis remains firmly part of the coach's plans.
Rather than suggesting a breakdown in relations or a loss of confidence, the decision reflects Pirates' determination to preserve one of their most valuable attacking assets.
With important matches approaching, the Buccaneers will hope their cautious approach pays dividends when Appollis is needed most.
