South African coach Reneilwe Letsholonyane continued his impressive start in Botswana after guiding Mochudi Centre Chiefs into the semi-finals of the African Hero Top 8 tournament.
Mochudi Centre Chiefs, also known as Maaparankwe, secured their place in the last four with a 3-1 victory over Morupule Wanderers at the National Stadium in Gaborone this past weekend.
The result extended a positive run for Letsholonyane, who returned to Botswana in September and has quickly made an impact since taking charge of the club. The former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana midfielder has enjoyed a strong start, with his team showing encouraging form in both league and cup competitions.
Last week, Letsholonyane guided Mochudi Centre Chiefs to back-to-back victories in the Botswana Premier League. He followed that achievement with another important win in the cup competition, keeping the team on course to challenge for silverware this season.
Mochudi Centre Chiefs opened the scoring against Morupule Wanderers in the 26th minute through former Cape Town Spurs striker Mpho Kgaswane. The early goal gave Letsholonyane’s side an advantage and helped them take control of the contest.
The team continued to apply pressure after the break and doubled its lead in the 70th minute. Kelvin Ndebelele found the back of the net after receiving an assist from Kgaswane, who played an important role in the victory.
Morupule Wanderers managed to score a goal later in the match, briefly giving themselves hope of getting back into the contest. However, Mochudi Centre Chiefs responded well and secured the result in the closing stages.
Argentinian forward Nicolas Melgajero scored the third goal in the 87th minute to confirm the 3-1 victory and send Maaparankwe through to the semi-finals.
The win will provide further confidence for Letsholonyane and his players as they prepare for their next league assignment. Mochudi Centre Chiefs are scheduled to face Jwaneng Galaxy on Wednesday, 28 October.
They currently sit fourth in the Botswana Premier League standings with 10 points, five points behind leaders Gaborone United. Letsholonyane will now look to maintain the team’s momentum as they continue their campaign in the league 6 the African Hero Top 8.
