F1 fans online have hatched a plan to vote Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll as the driver of the day at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Across social media platforms, there’s a light-hearted campaign to vote for Stroll, who has only received the award once before. That was at the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, when he finished on the podium for Williams as a rookie.
Stroll is one of only three drivers yet to score a point this season, which leaves him 21st in the championship. His best result is a 12th place in Malaysia, and he has failed to finish exactly two-thirds of the races.
It’s not the first time fans have jokingly rallied behind a struggling driver. At the 2021 Monaco Grand Prix, there was a surge in votes for Haas’ Nikita Mazepin, even though he was lapped.
There was a repeat in Canada the following year, this time directed at Stroll’s compatriot Nicholas Latifi. Latifi finished second-last, nearly a minute off race-winner Max Verstappen.
Neither of those drivers were given the award, with Bild explaining that F1 has put ‘automatic safeguards’ in place for unusual activity. If the outcome is obviously skewed, they could even make ‘manual corrections’.
This means that, if Stroll retires again or has an anonymous race in the lower midfield, he almost certainly won’t be named driver of the day. One suspects he would need to finish in the top 10, or come close, for F1 to even consider legitimising the vote.
While the share of votes for each driver is published, the total number of votes is kept private.
It could be argued that the campaign is disrespectful to Stroll, who has been one of the biggest targets for online trolls during his career. His worthiness for an F1 seat has been questioned, with critics arguing he is only on the grid because his father, Lawrence, owns Aston Martin.
However, the 28-year-old has scored 325 points in his career and, unlike half of the grid, has scored both a pole position and multiple podiums.
When announcing Fernando Alonso’s new contract last month, Aston Martin confirmed Stroll would also continue with the team in 2027.
Verstappen leads the way for driver of the day awards this season (seven), with champion-elect Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc tied for second (three).
