Tinubu Redeems $100,000 Super Falcons Pledge 16-month After 10th WAFCON Triumph

President Bola Tinubu has fulfilled his $100,000 cash reward promise to Nigeria’s Super Falcons, 16 months after the senior women’s national team secured a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco.

The players have started receiving payments totalling about ₦140 million, representing the naira equivalent of the President’s pledge made during a presidential reception at the State House in Abuja on Monday, 28 July 2025.

Tinubu had announced the $100,000 reward for each player following the Super Falcons’ dramatic 3-2 victory over hosts Morocco in the WAFCON final two days earlier.

Nigeria overturned a two-goal deficit to defeat the hosts and reclaim the African title, extending their record as the most successful team in the history of the competition.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) announced the fulfilment of the pledge in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, signed by Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media to the Director-General of the Commission.

Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade expressed appreciation to the President for honouring his commitment, describing the payment as recognition of the team’s achievement and contribution to Nigerian sports.

The payment comes as another major reward from the Tinubu administration to a victorious Nigerian women’s national team, following a similar $100,000 pledge to members of D’Tigress after their triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.

Nigeria won a fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, further strengthening its dominance in women’s basketball on the continent.

The NSC, led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, commended the President for fulfilling his commitment, describing the gesture as an encouragement to athletes and recognition of sporting excellence.

The Commission said the administration’s support for national teams also extended to athlete welfare, international exposure and the hosting of major sporting competitions.

Tinubu’s payment to the Super Falcons fulfils a pledge made after their historic WAFCON triumph, although the players had to wait 16 months to receive the promised financial reward.

The Super Falcons’ victory in Morocco secured Nigeria’s 10th continental title and reinforced their position as Africa’s most successful women’s national team.
