Man United are reportedly refusing to let their 3-2 comeback victory over Roma influence their long-term decision on Michael Carrick’s future.
The Red Devils secured their first victory in 10 matches on Tuesday after recovering from two goals down at Old Trafford.
Matheus Cunha scored twice, while Bruno Fernandes’ retaken penalty helped complete a memorable comeback against the Italian side.
However, Carrick remains under pressure, with United’s hierarchy still considering a managerial change following Sunday’s meeting with Aston Villa.
According to Sky Sports News reporter Rob Dorsett, as reported by Team Talk, INEOS have already decided against appointing another interim manager if Carrick is dismissed.
Dorsett explained that the club would instead move directly towards appointing a permanent replacement, with Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Fabian Hurzeler reportedly under consideration.
He said: “It’s been made clear to me that Man Utd are unlikely to appoint another interim coach if they decide to replace Carrick in the coming weeks.
“At the moment, there’s still support for Carrick. The preferred option for everyone involved is that results improve, performances improve, and Michael Carrick keeps his job.
“ But I think there’s a lingering concern that Man Utd are 17th in the Premier League, and only outside of the relegation places on goal difference.”
Dorsett added that United’s hierarchy viewed the Roma victory as chaotic and insufficient evidence that the team had turned a corner.
Meanwhile, David Ornstein believes United genuinely wanted Carrick to succeed after making him permanent head coach.
He suggested the club’s decision was influenced partly by the managerial market and the availability of suitable long-term replacements.
Carrick therefore remains under scrutiny, with the Aston Villa fixture potentially proving crucial to his future at Old Trafford.
