Barcelona’s approach to the full-back positions has become an important part of Hansi Flick’s tactical blueprint.
The German coach wants his defenders to offer more than protection at the back, with their movement helping Barcelona create attacking overloads.
Both flanks are expected to provide width, support the midfield and give the forwards additional options in the final third.
That responsibility requires players who are comfortable carrying the ball forward and making decisions under pressure.
Versatility is another valuable quality, particularly when injuries or changes in opposition tactics force Flick to adjust his defensive line-up.
The Catalans are now reportedly considering Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso as a potential replacement for Alejandro Balde, whose future at the club has become increasingly uncertain ahead of January.
According to Esport3, Barcelona are exploring a possible move for the Italian international, with Balde potentially included in negotiations as part of an exchange deal.
Andrea Cambiaso has developed into one of Juventus’ most adaptable defensive options since returning from his loan spell at Bologna in 2023.
Primarily a left-back, he is also capable of playing on the right and further forward, giving his managers several ways to use him.
His attacking instincts, ability to progress possession and willingness to push into advanced areas could make him an interesting fit for Flick’s system.
The Italian has also built up considerable experience in Serie A, recording three goals and four assists in 36 league appearances for Juventus during the 2025/26 campaign.
However, his role has reportedly become less secure this season, with limited minutes adding another dimension to the transfer speculation.
Balde’s situation could therefore become central to any potential agreement.
Roma have already been linked with the Barcelona left-back, while Juventus are understood to have previously shown interest in him.
The financial demands remain a major obstacle.
Barcelona are reportedly considering an offer of €25 million to €30 million, while Juventus value Cambiaso closer to €40 million.
Other reports suggest the Italian club may be reluctant to accept less than €30 million, with his contract running until 2029.
Including Balde could help bridge that gap, although any deal remains speculative at this stage.
