Manchester United's game against Bournemouth is subject to transport disruption

Everything you need to know about transport closures ahead of Manchester United vs Bournemouth

  1. The match: Manchester United host Bournemouth at 2pm on Sunday in a crucial game in manager Michael Carrick's tenure. It promises to be a tense afternoon on the pitch, but getting to the stadium is currently the biggest challenge.
  2. Supporters warned: The over 74,000 fans descending on Old Trafford will face severe travel disruptions across the city. Supporters who usually rely on public transport are being forced to find alternative routes to make the afternoon kick-off.
  3. Tram closures: Major engineering works have forced the complete closure of the Altrincham, Trafford Park and Eccles Metrolink lines for a fortnight. As a result, no direct tram services will be operating from the city centre to the stadium.
  4. Weather cancellations: Adding to the transport nightmare, severe weather conditions have caused further chaos across the broader local rail network. Coupled with the closures, the network is strained.
  5. Reduced services: Those hoping to use the Metrolink's remaining open routes will find that the Airport and East Didsbury lines are running on a heavily reduced schedule. Transport authorities have advised supporters travelling from these specific areas to catch the tram to Firswood instead.
  6. Shuttle buses: To help ease the mounting matchday traffic, dedicated replacement shuttle buses costing just £2 a ride have been laid on. These services will operate from Altrincham Interchange and Piccadilly Gardens on a frequent, load-and-go basis to transport crowds efficiently.
  7. Official statement: The Bee Network stated: "To support football fans travelling to and from Old Trafford, a range of alternative public transport options will be available, including replacement bus services, Bee Network bus services, ticket acceptance on selected rail services and a programme of dedicated football shuttle buses. Allow plenty of time for travel. We suggest departing an hour earlier than normal to ensure you arrive at the ground on time."
