Marco Melandri has given his verdict on the saga between Marc Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia at Ducati, pinpointing the ‘real knockout blow’ the Spaniard has dealt his Italian teammate in the 2026 MotoGP season.

The latest Malaysian Grand Prix exposed the widening gap between the factory Ducati riders, as Marquez cruised to victory while Bagnaia limped home in a distant 13th place, trailing by over 32 seconds.

A psychological gap on identical bikes

The race results did not just reveal a numerical deficit but a deeper psychological chasm. Marquez’s dominance was emphatic, consistently outpacing Bagnaia by more than 1.5 seconds per lap on identical GP26 machinery.

This contrast in confidence and pace throws a harsh spotlight on Bagnaia’s struggles, especially as he had entered the Malaysian weekend buoyed by optimism, calling it his “most concrete opportunity” to shine before his imminent exit from Ducati.

Melandri on Marquez's simplicity

Reflecting on Bagnaia’s plight, Melandri, a five-time premier class Grand Prix winner, expressed genuine sympathy on the Chiacchiere da Box podcast. “I really do hope that Bagnaia can bounce back too, because it’s only right that a champion like him should be able to finish his career on a high – it’s just so sad to see him like this,” he said.

Melandri lamented the visible sadness in Bagnaia’s demeanor, emphasizing that racing is supposed to be a “wonderful, joyful, fun sport,” not one that drains the spirit of a rider who has dreamed of this journey since childhood.

The real blow, Melandri explained, lies in Marquez’s extraordinary ‘simplicity’ and fluidity on the bike, which has left Bagnaia struggling to match his teammate’s level. “The simplicity with which Marquez does things – that’s the real knockout blow,” Melandri stated.

He described Marquez’s riding style as deceptively effortless, noting how the Spaniard’s minimal yet masterful movements on the bike allow him to be “always in the right place at the right time.” This precision extends to his brake control and throttle application, creating a riding style that appears almost leisurely yet is devastatingly effective.

Bagnaia's final rounds at Ducati

Marquez’s Malaysian triumph marked his 16th win across both MotoGP formats in 2026, while Bagnaia has only claimed a single victory, the Brno Sprint.

This disparity highlights Marquez’s continued supremacy and underscores Bagnaia’s harsh reality as he prepares to transition to Aprilia for the 2027 campaign, seeking a fresh start after a turbulent final season at Ducati.

Despite the daunting situation, Bagnaia still has three rounds remaining in 2026 to salvage some pride and perhaps end his Ducati tenure on a more positive note. Melandri’s insights cast a revealing light on the psychological and technical battle playing out behind the scenes, with Marquez’s understated mastery delivering a crushing blow to his teammate’s hopes and confidence.
