The Birkenhead Sunday League committee and member teams have offered their deepest condolences to the family and members of Queens Park following the sad passing of club stalwart Tommy Dunne.
Tommy joined Queens in 1970, dedicating decades to the club by doing everything from putting up nets and marking the pitch to serving as secretary from 1983 until 2024. He was an integral part of the club’s immense success over the years; the club remains eternally grateful and honoured to have had such a man associated with the club, and he leaves a legacy that will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Tommy, a true gentleman.
On the pitch, Fender FC put the memory of last week’s Cheshire Cup exit firmly behind them to maintain their perfect start in the Nuclear Competitions Birkenhead Sunday League Premier Division. A 5-2 victory over rivals Rock Ferry Social made it seven wins from seven, with Ben Kearney again on target alongside Jake Clarke, Carl Navarro, and the returning Billy Rainbow (pictured). Keegan Warrington and Jayden Jones provided the consolation goals for Rock Ferry.
Queens remain hot on the heels of the leaders after a 3-1 win against Rig Move FC. Ben Wood’s start to life at his new club could not have gone better, as he bagged his second successive hat-trick in only his second game to seal the points.
Meanwhile, Woodchurch Hotel celebrated a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Bidston. Jordan Deer led the way with a hat-trick, supplemented by efforts from James Davies and Dan Pickervance, while Dega Taylor struck the reply for Bidston.
In the Championship, Shaftesbury and Seamus O’Donnell shared the spoils in an entertaining 3-3 draw. Stephen Abbot, Sam Allen, and an own goal made up the Shaftesbury tally, while Tyler Matthews, Jason Bull, and Harvey Stewart responded for the visitors.
Neston Nomads took over at the top of the table thanks to a 2-0 victory over Wirral Hundred, secured by goals from Liam Engert and Charlie Price. Elsewhere, a Jordan Dilworth goal for Corsair was cancelled out by a Liam Atherton effort for Higher Bebington Kelma as the sides played out a 1-1 stalemate.
In League One, Upton Town’s recent woes continued as they were beaten 7-1 by Lions FC. Matt Lydiate and Mark Head both bagged doubles, with Adam Horton, Tim Povall, and Paul Ryan completing the scoring, while Glen Craze netted Upton’s consolation.
AFC Raeburn fell to a narrow 4-3 defeat against Lottie Dod despite goals from Jack Presswell (2) and Manny Mithi-Nelson. The winning strikes came courtesy of a Cai Duncan brace, Cam Jones, and Liam Pitt.
League Two action saw MSC Eastham run riot in an 8-0 victory against AFC Rangers. Jack Hughes was the main instigator with a five-goal haul, while Tom Fletcher netted a brace and Andy Grice added the gloss.
Lighthouse and West Kirby Wasps shared a 1-1 draw, with Dom Quirke scoring for Lighthouse and James Corcoran on target for the Wasps.
Meanwhile, New Ferry Rangers secured an impressive 5-3 win over West Kirby United. Joel Spain was in fine form with a hat-trick, supported by Luke Burns and Kyle Robinson, while a Jake Quarmby brace and a Tom Fleming goal replied for West Kirby.
In the last remaining Cheshire Cup second-round tie, a Shay Duggan brace was enough to see Beechwood progress past Lancelyn Glenavon. Beechwood will now face Stockport Orion FC in the next round.
The Tony Houlihan Memorial Challenge Cup second round saw Glenavon Athletic seal a 2-0 win over The Dell thanks to a Brandon Scott double. A Jack Roberts brace also guided Heswall to a narrow 2-1 victory over AFC Tima, who replied through Ryan Innes.
Woodchurch Rovers produced the day’s biggest scoreline, hitting eleven without reply against Whistle FC. Ross Rule led the charge with a hat-trick; Dan Kendal, Hayden Gardener, and Ryan Thompson all netted doubles, and Tommy Atherton and Lewis Hunts completed the scoring.
Finally, New Brighton Rakers and AFC Nelson played out a rare 0-0 stalemate, with the Rakers holding their nerve
