Inter had an almost record-breaking start before falling in the recent derby with Milan, where all their lingering problems came to a head in their first Serie A loss. The Nerazzurri have come out flat in several matches, but almost always managed to storm back.
That wasn’t the case on Saturday after their crosstown rivals built a two-nothing lead and quickly responded after Alessandro Bastoni scored. According to Corriere dello Sport, La Beneamata needs to improve to break the curse of the last nine Italian champions, none of which have been able to repeat following Juventus’ cycle. They and Napoli had to wait a year to take home multiple titles in that timeframe.
Inter have been plagued by defensive problems early on. They have already given up 13 goals, 5 more than Lazio and Como. They have the second most prolific attack behind Roma. However, it can’t bail them out all the time.
The Nerazzurri brass hoped to refuel the squad’s energy and hunger through the transfer market. However, their newcomers have brought little to the table. Curtis Jones and John Stones didn’t impress and quickly got hurt. Djed Spence has only recently started seeing regular minutes, without faring too well.
It was bound to happen against a quality team. Routinely having to climb out of early holes isn’t sustainable. Their sheer superiority has carried them in most matches, but the competition is better than expected.
Still, they remain the clear favorites, as they have more room to grow than their foes. Lautaro Martinez has missed time, Hakan Calhanoglu, Federico Dimarco, and Manuel Akanji have been subpar so far, and their newcomers should eventually be net positives.
