Emmanuel Emegha didn’t have long on the pitch to impress tonight against Liverpool, but he did charge around a bit, barge into Virgil van Dijk, and make some enthusiastic runs.
He offered a fair bit, and looks to have a good chance of supplanting Danny Welbeck as Joao Pedro’s replacement before long.
“It’s hard to make the debut with that moment that could have meant everything for him, for us,” Alonso replied when asked about the striker’s missed penalty, which could have won the tie,
“But to learn from all the experiences, today was a sad one. I tell myself that as soon as we take the bus, I move on and think about United.”
Beyond a missed penalty, the most important thing was that Emegha finally got on the pitch in a competitive game for Chelsea, and got some minutes in his legs.
We’d imagine he still won’t be considered ready to start on Saturday, but he will certainly be needed for an important role. Given his last couple of years, we don’t have too much faith in his fitness – but there’s always a chance this is a new dawn.
Alonso didn’t bring on Estevao for even a minute in the game, and had to answer questions about that afterwards.
Estevao didn’t get on the pitch during the game – but fans sang his name through the second half. It’s a strange situation.
Chelsea lost Maxence Lacroix at the end of the first half, with the defender picking up what looks like a hamstring injury.
