Bury beat Prescot Cables 3-0 to reach FA Trophy round two

As in their previous Trophy match, Bury made a number of changes, offering fringe players an opportunity to start.

Testimony Igbinoghene and Murat Aydogan were brought in from the Under 21s.

Harrison Aubrey-Williams and Charlie Cox from the Emerging Talent Group were recalled from their respective clubs.

Daniel Adshead made only his second Bury appearance after the previous round of the FA Trophy and Dom Telford made his first start since returning to the club.

The Shakers didn’t have to wait long to open the scoring, Igbinoghene winning the ball played in George Glendon who spread the ball out to Rustam Stepans.

Stepans pulled the ball back to Glendon who finished well to the far corner, giving Bury the lead after six minutes.

Cables proved to be no pushovers, however, and quickly took the match to their hosts.

Former Ramsbottom United pair, John Murphy and Tony Donaldson, both came close to scoring, Mitch Allen forced into saves on both occasions while Sharif Deans came closer still when his left-footed strike cannoned off the crossbar.

While the away side looked to claim an equaliser, the next goal fell to the hosts who doubled their lead.

A short-taken Daniel Adshead corner was played back to the midfielder who swung a cross destined for the far corner.

Dom Telford may have got the faintest of touches to the effort as it continued into the back of the net and was credited with the goal.

Both sides came close to scoring again but whether it was the conditions or just the heat of the moment, chances were spurned.

DJ Pedro fluffed his lines when played through on goal while a Stepans shot was blasted high and wide.

At the other end, Jack Loughran had a great opportunity but shot straight at Allen.

Late in the half, Stepans teed up by Mo Touray saw a powerful effort well saved by Tony Thompson in the Cables goal and Pedro glanced a header wide from a James Melhado cross.

After the break, Prescot Cables had a great chance to claim a goal back from a corner.

With Mitch Allen beaten, Rustam Stepans cleared off the line.

Substitute Kai Evans, when presented with a corner kick of his own, was urged to shoot as his last two goals have come direct from the corner flag.

Thompson, however, was on hand to punch away an in-swinger that most certainly was intended to be a shot on goal.

The home side controlled the second half well and their possession play eventually led to another goal.

Stepans sent a cross into the box and the unmarked DJ Pedro stooped low to head it into the back of the net for 3-0.

There might have been more goals, Stepans trying his luck cut inside from the right and with a left-footed effort forced Thompson into an excellent save to push the ball wide and away.

James Melhado and substitute Tom Carr nearly provided a replica of Bury’s third goal as a Melhado cross from the right was headed wide by Carr under some pressure from his marker.

There was little fight left in the visitors but the closest they came was from former Bury man Josh Gregory.

His shot from distance nearly caught out Mitch Allen who recovered to maintain his clean sheet and Bury’s safe passage into the second round of the FA Trophy.
