Leeds United are in the process of expanding Elland Road to a whopping 53,000-capacity stadium, and it has left Steven Gerrard delighted, speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash against Tottenham.

Development of the famous West Stand has begun, which is expected to be completed in 2028. It could have been done sooner, but Paraag Marathe and The 49ers did not want to lose the noise it generates.

Upon completion, Elland Road’s capacity will increase to 48,000. After that, attention will turn to the Don Revie Stand, where a further 5,000 seats will be added, taking the overall attendance to a massive 53,000.

Steven Gerrard delighted with what’s happening at Elland Road

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s match between Leeds and Spurs, Steven Gerrard was asked just how iconic Elland Road is. He played 11 times against Leeds, five of which came at Elland Road, winning two times.

Gerrard was a substitute when Mark Viduka scored four goals for Leeds to beat Liverpool 4-3, with the Aussie striker embarrassing Jamie Carragher to secure a memorable three points for Leeds back in 2000.

He told TNT Sports he’s delighted that Elland Road is being given a revamp, and that Leeds are not moving to a new location: “It wasn’t always easy because I played against some fantastic teams here.

“But the crowd, the noise, they bring their voices here and it doesn’t half help them. That’s what makes it so difficult. I am delighted they are going to improve Elland Road, and that they’re not moving anywhere.”

Where are Leeds currently at in terms of redevelopment?

Leeds fans are anxious for the redevelopment to be completed, with 20,000 fans rumoured to be on the season ticket waiting list. It has been a long time coming, and finally Elland Road is getting a revamp.

Ground excavation and deep foundation piling are underway behind the existing West Stand, but the West Stand remains fully operational. Daniel Farke explained Leeds cannot lose the support of fans.

It has been almost a year since Leeds City Council provided planning permission for the redevelopment, with the operation set to cost The 49ers £200m. It also includes development in the surrounding area.

That includes improving transport options, with the best part of another 20,000 fans making their way to the ground on a matchday. Almost 2000 new homes will be built, as well as hotel and leisure facilities.
