Yeovil Town sent clear message by boss to avoid another FA Cup shock exit

Yeovil have scored six in successive games - but have to avoid crashing out to lower league sides for the third straight year

Billy Rowley has urged Yeovil Town to keep their feet on the ground as they prepare to begin their FA Cup campaign away at Leatherhead on Saturday.

The Glovers head into the fourth qualifying round tie having scored 12 goals across their last two matches, recording back-to-back 6-0 victories over Boston United and Wealdstone.

However, Rowley is keen to ensure his side do not become complacent as they look to progress to the first round proper, particularly given last year Yeovil were knocked out by lower tier Hemel Hempstead Town, and the same the year before by Chesham

“I think we’ve got a really level-headed group, really professional group of lads, so I haven’t really sensed any overconfidence or cockiness,” Rowley said.

“We have to approach every game with a kind of equal amount of confidence and cockiness as we do humility.”

Leatherhead have reached this stage after victories over AFC Croydon, Kingstonian and Hanworth Villa, although they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Chestnut last time out.

Rowley believes his side must combine their confidence on the ball with the same work rate and determination they have shown in recent weeks.

“We want to run harder than everyone, we want to fight for every ball, we want to win every goal, but we also want to be really confident on the ball and show what we’re about,” he said.

“The lads have bought into that and they’re showing that they’re capable of both sides of the ball at the minute, which is really important for us.”

The Yeovil boss has also been pleased with the attitude of his squad, praising the players’ professionalism during what has been an impressive period of form.

“The lads’ hard work day-to-day, it’s been another really good week out here for us,” Rowley said.

He added that the club had worked hard to recruit players who would fit both the team’s style of play and the culture within the dressing room.

“I think it’s important that we keep our feet on the ground, we keep working hard every day and every week, and long may it continue.”

With Yeovil now entering the FA Cup, Rowley is aware of what progression could mean for the club and its supporters.

The Glovers will be hoping to reach the first round proper, where the possibility of drawing a Football League side adds further incentive.

“It’s a competition that we as a club, I’m sure, and I know the fans do, the ownership do, we want to do really well in this,” he said.

“You often dream of going and playing against a Man United or something in these competitions, but that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?”

Rowley has full faith in his players to approach the tie with the right mentality, but stressed the importance of taking their performance levels into Saturday’s fixture.

“We want to make sure that we are turning up at Leatherhead, the best version of us, work really hard and we should get a positive result there,” he said.

Yeovil will be without Zane Westbrooke, who is ruled out with a calf injury, while Ryan Jones faces a late fitness test after suffering a head knock against Wealdstone.

And club captain Luke McCormick has joined National League side AFC Fylde on loan until 13th January 2027.

A club statement added: "Following internal discussions, an agreement has been reached that allows Luke to continue playing his football with AFC Fylde for the coming months. Everyone at Yeovil Town wishes Luke well during his time at AFC Fylde."

But the Glovers will be hoping to continue their impressive form as they being their FA Cup journey with a place in the first-round proper up for grabs.
