The Tifosi are all up in arms making the same complaint after watching Ferrari drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc flop in qualifying for the United States Grand Prix.
Ferrari were the team to beat going into qualifying at the Circuit of the Americas, having led all three practice sessions to open the United States GP weekend. Yet when it mattered, the pride of Italy failed to take the fight to Mercedes and Red Bull in Austin, Texas this Saturday.
Leclerc achieved a practice double on Friday at COTA, after he led the timesheets in FP1 and FP2 at the wheel of Ferrari’s updated SF-26. The Scuderia also started Saturday on tap, after Hamilton led FP3 at the United States GP, as Ferrari teased taking their first pole of the year.
In the end, however, Ferrari’s updated SF-26 at COTA could not carry Leclerc or Hamilton to P1 on the grid. Instead, bragging rights in qualifying went the way of Mercedes and Red Bull, as Andrea Kimi Antonelli took pole for the United States GP by 0.179s over Max Verstappen.
Hamilton was suspicious about Mercedes and Red Bull’s pace in Q3 at COTA, as he felt they both gained further ground on Ferrari during the final phase of qualifying that the Scuderia had no chance of matching. Ultimately, Leclerc led Ferrari’s efforts in Q3 as he took P4 with a 1:34.267, while Hamilton qualified P6 with a 1:34.613, to Antonelli’s 1:34.035 pole effort.
Given that Leclerc finished qualifying 0.232s adrift of pole and Hamilton was 0.578s slower than Antonelli during Q3 at COTA, many Ferrari fans on Reddit have voiced their frustration with how the Maranello natives lulled them into a false sense of hope throughout practice.
One Ferrari F1 fan noted: “This organisation need to be investigated for scamming.” Another Scuderia supporter also suggested: “I really thought this time would be different, but it’s the same Ferrari.” One fan of the pride of Italy also suggested: “I mean, is anyone surprised?”
Another Ferrari fan claimed: “People forget the days of Ferrari’s practice domination far too quickly. Never amounts to anything most of the time.” One fan even claimed about Ferrari’s qualifying result: “It’s like that saying, Fool me shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”
One Ferrari F1 fan also said: “Death, taxes and Ferrari being a disappointment after being P1 in practice.” And one Scuderia fan noted: “These Free Practice merchants fooled me again.”
The United States GP is far from the first time that Ferrari’s fans have been left disappointed by what Hamilton and Leclerc have managed to achieve during a qualifying session this year. Both have only qualified as high as P2, with Hamilton doing so thrice and Leclerc four times.
Ferrari’s fans are fed up with their false promise during practice, having regularly topped the timesheets on a Friday only to then fall short when it counts. And their frustrations were on full display after qualifying at COTA, given that Ferrari had enjoyed a clean sweep in practice.
