Michael Carrick promised a “different team” but Manchester United laboured to a 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth that leaves the head coach hanging by a thread. Headlines were made before a ball was even kicked when Carrick decided to leave Bruno Fernandes out of his starting lineup, following the captain’s criticism of their tactics in the 4-1 midweek defeat in Como.
And shortly before half-time, United found themselves behind again as Rayan was completely free at the back post to stab home from a free-kick. That lead was swiftly doubled when Leny Yoro slipped in his own half and Adrien Truffert took over, laying the ball onto Marcus Tavernier for a simple tap-in.
In the second half, Matheus Cunha was thrown on but Fernandes left to stew on the bench, but Carrick's masterplan backfired when Lammens was beaten to the ball by Evanilson and the striker then curled his shot into the back of the net from a tight angle. The result confirmed United's unbeaten run stretching to eight games on yet another miserable day this season.
Here, Express Sport rates how the United players fared against Bournemouth…
Goalkeeper
Senne Lammens - 4
Very positive when claiming corners and there was little he could do for either of the first two goals, but getting beaten to a long ball by Evanilson when miles out of his area compounded United's defeat and he will be bitterly disappointed.
Leny Yoro - 4
Turfed out at right-back again and made a vital interception at the back post to deny Evanilson an eighth-minute opener, but made a disastrous error when he slipped at the worst possible time to allow Truffert to slide the ball for Tavernier to double the visitors’ lead.
Harry Maguire - 4
Today’s captain left his defence completely unorganised when Rayan somehow found himself in acres of space at the back post to score from a wide free-kick. The back four were all at sea on several occasions and as the senior player, Maguire needed to step in and take charge.
Ayden Heaven - 3
Very lucky that Evanilson jumped out of a tackle when Heaven went flying in with two feet. His punishment came seconds later when Rayan fired home from the resulting free-kick. Looked utterly petrified as the game went on, especially with the ball at his feet, and it was baffling that Lisandro Martinez was not brought on before the 65th minute.
Diogo Dalot - 5
Quite often the spare man on the left, but failed to take advantage and looked isolated. Eerily reminiscent of when Ruben Amorim tried to play him as a left wing-back.
Midfield
Andrey Santos - 2
Spent the majority of the match walking a tightrope after a silly yellow card in the first half. Left the former Chelsea man unable to get as close to Bournemouth’s midfield as he would have liked. Could not get close to Bournemouth's dangermen, struggled in possession and was a major net negative. His worst performance in a United shirt.
Carlos Baleba - 6
The best of a bad bunch in midfield, and the £70million man is still working his way back to full fitness, but much more is needed. Kobbie Mainoo a big miss again today.
Youri Tielemans - 5
Tasked with becoming United’s creator-in-chief in the absence of Fernandes but failed to get to grips with the game and got hooked at half-time for Matheus Cunha.
Attack
Amad - 4
Needed to be United’s dynamic spark, with a lack of pace in the team outside of Amad, but never really got into the game.
Bryan Mbeumo - 6
The only player with a Premier League goal for United to start and nearly added to his tally moments after Rayan’s opener, but Djordje Petrovic saved well from close range. Had more joy in the second half but was largely devoid of service.
Mason Mount - 3
Completely ineffective on the left and you fear Mount is starting to run out of chances at United now. Brought into the number 10 role for the second half but didn't fare any better when central.
Substitutes
Matheus Cunha (45') - 6
Took up more responsibility than any other United forward when he emerged at half-time, but couldn't make the difference.
Lisandro Martinez (65') - 5
Only seconds after coming off the bench was Martinez winging to the referee that he had been fouled when Rayan completely left him for dead inside the box before missing the target.
Joshua Zirkzee (73') - 6
Too little, too late. Striker thrown on when 3-0 down when he probably should have started after a goal at Como in midweek.
Shea Lacey (78') - 6
A good cross late on after beating his man, but his game will most be remembered for coming on in the final substitution window while Fernandes was left to sit on the bench.
