Nottingham Forest's shock triumph over Manchester City last night dumped Manchester United into the relegation zone.
It is not somewhere they have been after a match round since 1986-87, when Sir Alex Ferguson's second match as manager ended in a 0-0 draw at Norwich.
If United don't beat Aston Villa today, they will remain in the bottom three throughout the international window, knowing their next game is at old rivals Liverpool on 22 November.
As Michael Carrick points out in his programme notes, his side can't allow Thursday's thrilling victory over Roma to be a one-off.
"While we can be really pleased with elements of the performance on Tuesday night, we must absolutely know there is so much more to come from our team," he outlines.
"We must be ready to show that we can back up Tuesday’s victory and begin to create the momentum to give ourselves something to build on after the international break."
