Angel Reese angrily confronts WNBA referee as playoff tensions boil over
Angel Reese angrily argued with an official over foul calls in Game 4

Angel Reese spent most of Game 4 arguing with the officials, and the Golden State Valkyries did enough to make her afternoon difficult in the first place.

Reese was seen in an angry conversation with a referee near her bench, and she clapped in frustration, complaining that she was being hit on every play. The Valkyries beat the Atlanta Dream 67-62 on Saturday to even the WNBA Finals at 2-2.

Reese, who was slammed for "giving up" in a close Game 1 loss, went 2-for-12 from the field and finished with eight points and nine rebounds, which ended a run of three straight double-doubles to open the series. She also blocked three shots but committed six of Atlanta’s 18 turnovers.

The game was physical, with a lot of contact on both sides. Atlanta attempted 31 free throws to Golden State’s 13, but Reese’s frustration was about the plays that were not called as she tried to finish around the basket.

After the game, she did not blame the officiating. “I think it was me. I think I rushed a lot on my shots and I didn’t take my time and finish around the basket like I’ve been doing the last three games,” Reese said. “It happens, and I’m just looking forward to the next game.”

Golden State changed its approach in the days between games. The Valkyries swapped Cecilia Zandalasini and Kayla Thornton out of the starting lineup for Tiffany Hayes and Kaila Charles, and they sent more defenders at Reese than in Games 2 and 3, when she had 30 points and 21 points.

Kiah Stokes led that effort and finished with 16 rebounds and three blocks, making her the first player in WNBA history with 14 blocks in a Finals series.

“She’s been the head of their snake all series, so for me it was just trying to make every look that she had of the basket difficult,” Stokes said.

The Valkyries also took control of the turnover battle early, winning it 16-4 in the first half, and they led by as many as 16 at halftime behind a 9-0 run from Zandalasini, Gabby Williams, and Veronica Burton.

Williams had 17 points, Hayes and Burton each had 13, and Zandalasini added 10. Atlanta shot 33 percent and went 4-for-23 from three, and the 62 points were a season low for the Dream.

Rhyne Howard led Atlanta with 19 points, and she said the effort fell short: “We knew they were going to come out aggressive. If you’re asking us what they did, I would say it was about the lack of effort on our part.”

Reese said the Dream needs to be sharper from the start. “We applied a lot of pressure, but we can’t wait until the second half to do it,” Reese said.

She added that she expects to be back at State Farm Arena for a potential Game 6 despite a scheduling overlap with Atlanta’s NBA team, as the series now shifts to Game 5 on Monday in the Bay Area.
