Tensions have been brewing between former Spire Motorsports teammates Carson Hocevar and many of his fellow Cup Series drivers, including Zane Smith, all season. They boiled over on Sunday immediately after the Freeway Insurance 500 at the Phoenix Raceway.
Both NASCAR drivers were jockeying for eighth place with 15 laps to go onto Turn 3. Hocevar's No. 77 Chevrolet pushed into Smith's No. 38 Ford, causing Smith to lose a bit of position.
After the race - won by Tyler Reddick to end his poor run of form - Smith went out of his way to slam into Hocevar on the cooldown lap. When Smith's spotters told him over the radio that Hocevar had actually been pushed into him by Ross Chastain, Smith responded with an expletive.
Smith finished 15th, while Hocevar snuck past him for a 12th-place finish. The pair have sparred twice this season, once at Chicagoland, when Smith contacted Hocevar and harried him into a wall, and once at Iowa.
When showed a picture of Hocevar on a June taping of a 'Bussin' With the Boys'' podcast, Smith immeidately blurted out, "Bumf---."
"He'll try to talk to you after, saying 'I don't talk to anybody out there' -- he's full of s***," the Spire driver added about his old teammate."He tries to be your buddy, and then will go and screw you."
"And so it's like, don't even talk to me in the first place, because one, I don't like you, and we're gonna eventually have a run-in together, so let's just not talk in the first place."
Hocevar, a member of the 16-man Chase playoff picture, remains in 11th place, 158 points behind Kyle Larson on top. Smith did not qualify for the Chase playoffs.
Reddick had been in free fall before Sunday's race in Phoenix, but his result brings him up to seventh. Larson's 34th-place finish wasn't enough to keep him from the top spot, but his lead over Christopher Bell (fourth in Phoenix) cut the margin to just five points.
