Mike Tirico had time for a cheeky joke after a Green Bay Packers 'Sunday Night Football' touchdown following a premature fireworks launch a few players earlier
NBC's "Sunday Night Football" play-by-play commentator Mike Tirico was certain that Green Bay Packers receiver Matthew Golden hauled in a second-quarter 23-yard pass from Jordan Love for a touchdown.
So did the Lambeau Field fireworks operator, who released the full package of explosions before the ball fell out of Golden's hands and onto the Packers turf. " Lofted, touchdown, Golden again, and then loses it at the end, incomplete," Tirico called live on the NBC broadcast. "Fireworks go off on the field."
Golden, who had an eventful game featuring a first-quarter touchdown and a controversial taunting penalty, redeemed himself by making an impressive leaping 21-yard catch a play later to set up a first-and-goal.
The Packers wideout drew a pass interference penalty a play later before Love dived into the endzone for the score, putting Green Bay up 16-0.
Tirico found time to slip in a fireworks-related joke.
“Those fireworks, not wasted," he beamed; color commentator Cris Collinsworth couldn't help but chuckle.
The Packers eventually knocked off the visiting Dallas Cowboys 23-13 with relative ease an improved to 4-2 on the young season. Dallas dropped to 2-4.
Golden also dropped a wide-out 42-yard touchdown in the first half, but the second-year player still finished with one of the best games of his young career.
"There's an alternate universe right now where Matthew Golden has 9 catches for 247 yards and 4 touchdowns," one account on X noted. "Matthew Golden should have like 30 fantasy points rn, the Sleeper NFL account tweeted.
The 2025 first-round pick out of Houston caught six passes for 104 yards and a touchdown. The performance was his third 100+ yard showing of the season and his second straight.
In fact, he became the first Packers pass-catcher with consecutive 100+ yard games in the same season since 2021 (Davante Adams). This marks a big improvement from his rookie year, where he finished with 29 catches for 361 yards and zero scores cumulatively
Green Bay was never really troubled on Sunday, with Dallas gaining most of their yards in fourth-quarter garbage time. The team's strong showing came without the still-recovering Micah Parsons. The star edge rusher was acquired from the Cowboys in a blockbuster 2025 offseason trade and remained animated on the sidelines throughout.
Running back Josh Jacobs is slated to suit up for Green Bay in Week 7 against the Detroit Lions, putting an end to the team's muddied backfield picture.
