Mason Greenwood suffers 6-0 humiliation on return to English football

Mason Greenwood endured a humiliating return to English football on Wednesday evening, suffering a crushing defeat in the Champions League.

The former Manchester United forward has experienced a turbulent career since emerging as one of the most promising graduates of the club’s academy.

Greenwood joined United aged six and made his competitive senior debut under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer against Paris Saint-Germain in March 2019.

Renowned for his ability to finish with either foot, the attacker scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for the Red Devils, establishing himself as one of England’s most exciting young prospects.

However, his career at Old Trafford came to an abrupt halt following his arrest in January 2022.

Greenwood was subsequently charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour.

All charges were dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew and new material came to light.

Manchester United conducted an internal investigation before announcing that Greenwood would continue his career elsewhere.

Following a loan spell at Getafe, he joined Marseille permanently in 2024, becoming Ligue 1’s joint-leading goalscorer during his debut campaign.

His impressive performances in France eventually earned him a move to Fenerbahce in July 2026.

However, controversy has continued to follow the 25-year-old.

Earlier this month, Greenwood received a straight red card after reportedly kicking an opponent during a friendly against Azerbaijani side Turan Tovuz.

Now, his latest appearance has delivered another miserable evening.

Mason Greenwood suffers 6-0 defeat

Greenwood’s return to England ended in humiliation as Fenerbahce were thrashed 6-0 by Aston Villa in the Champions League at Villa Park.

Greenwood was also subjected to a hostile reception from the Villa Park crowd, with home supporters repeatedly booing the former Manchester United attacker throughout his appearance.

Unai Emery’s side dismantled the Turkish visitors, with Johan Manzambi opening the scoring after just 12 minutes.

Nicolas Jackson then struck twice before half-time, capitalising on defensive mistakes to give Villa a commanding three-goal advantage.

Ross Barkley added a fourth from the penalty spot in the 68th minute before completing his brace four minutes later with a deflected effort.

Former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham completed the rout with a sixth goal in the 90th minute.

Greenwood started on the right wing but struggled to influence proceedings against the Premier League opposition.

The former United attacker registered just 48 touches, failed with both attempted dribbles and created no chances.

He completed 32 of his 35 passes but failed to provide a goal or assist.

His best opportunity came in the 19th minute when his effort from outside the penalty area was comfortably saved by Zion Suzuki.

Greenwood also wasted a promising free-kick in the second half, striking the defensive wall before Villa launched a counterattack.

Fenerbahce manager Ismail Kartal eventually substituted him in the 69th minute, introducing Dorgeles Nene.

The encounter also featured several other former Manchester United players.

Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka started in Villa’s defence, helping the hosts keep a clean sheet against Greenwood’s side.

Alejandro Garnacho entered the action from Villa’s bench in the 79th minute, while former United striker Romelu Lukaku came on for Fenerbahce in the 69th.

For Greenwood, it was an evening to forget, with his first competitive appearance back on English soil ending in a six-goal humiliation.
