Leeds Dilemma: 49ers Must Choose Between Daniel Farke and 'Unbelievable' Star For Next Level Push

After deciding late that he wanted a career in sports journalism, Daniel worked his way up the ladder in an unconventional manner. Having opted against university, Daniel worked with Sky Sports as a freelance contributor and translator during transfer windows while also volunteering on several other blog pages and outlets to get a portfolio of content together. Daniel then worked with Barnet FC as part of their social media team before starting his own website, which focused on football and MMA content. That eventually led to work with 90min and Reach PLC with The Mirror, Daily Record, Daily Express, and Manchester Evening News. Following that, Daniel spent two-and-a-half years with Breaking Media covering Everton, Rangers, Leeds, West Ham and other clubs before joining GiveMeSport as a Premier League editor. As well as football, Daniel is a huge MMA fan and has appeared on YouTube and podcast content too.

Leeds United are in a weird position in the Premier League currently, following their disappointing 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth this past weekend.

The Whites have now won just one of their last nine games, a 4-1 victory over Newcastle, while they have drawn five and lost three in that run of fixtures. But despite winning just two of their nine games so far in the division, they currently sit 11th in the table and four points above the relegation zone.

Farke is into the final year of his contract at Elland Road, and talks earlier in this season saw an agreement over a new deal being close to extending his time at the club. However, no deal has been signed yet at this stage, and his future is far from confirmed beyond the current campaign.

Some fans have begun to question whether he may have taken the team as far as he can with his style, tactics and temperament, and keeping the club in the top-flight one more time before moving on to a more adventurous manager could be ideal.

Others believe that he is not getting the rub of the green with some of the draws and results recently, and that the 49ers need to back him more to enable him to be braver and more forward-thinking.

Leeds don't want to be a club that is constantly just battling to stay in the division, and at some point that means the manager must start thinking about winning games rather than just not losing. While the transfer window may not have been ideal, the squad is still strong enough to be doing better than it is, and Farke has the options and solutions in his squad to improve things if he wants to.

One of the things he could and should be doing is picking more attack-minded players. A back five with a midfield three of Ao Tanaka, Ethan Ampadu and Anton Stach doesn't scream goals or attacking threat, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin's goalscoring has so far been too heavily relied upon.

The club brought in Jean-Matteo Bahoya to strengthen their attack, but so far the 21-year-old has featured for just 11 minutes in the Premier League. Lukas Nmecha, Brendan Aaronson, Harry Wilson, and Dan James are yet to score this season, while Noah Okafor has only managed one strike.

But despite all the struggles in attack, Farke has made it abundantly clear that he has no plans to use Bahoya at this stage.

“Again, I will go out after this press conference and give him a hug. But let's stop this unbelievable hype around these young players. Believe me, it's not healthy for their development.

"He needs to add a bit of physicality to his game. He needs to improve his decision making, his finishing, and all. There are several aspects in the game that he needs to improve, and we want to do this.

“And if during the season he improves step by step by step right now on this level, he can develop into a player who can compete for minutes, and perhaps also even to compete for a place in the starting lineup or for many minutes.

“And if this happens, then we have a bar gain because normally for a winger in Premier League level you spend double figures, millions of pounds. We have spent a small fee, loan fee more or less, but we have said we don't expect anything.“And we have said in this moment, listen, we don't expect an immediate impact, but we believe in this guy because he's a top character. It's a joy to work with him. He has lots of potential with his pace.

Premier League Era Before or After

Did it happen before or after?

Round 1 of 9

Bahoya joined the club on a season-long loan with the option to make the move permanent next summer if he impresses, but it seems like currently there is no plan for that to happen.

He hasn't been given the opportunity to impress, and with Farke opting to use a system that doesn't really suit him anyway, it would be an odd use of more than £20m for a team who are desperate to strengthen in each transfer window.

It seems to be a decision that nobody expected, but the 49ers must decide the type of direction they want to go in over the next 12 months.

If they are happy to continue surviving and playing it safe, then a new contract for Farke should be at the top of their priorities. But if they want to be braver and more exciting, then the club should look to step in and enforce the decision to get Bahoya on the pitch more to get an opportunity to bring him in permanently.

He has all the attributes that the team are currently lacking in attack, and nobody is expecting him to step into the lineup and immediately become the next Raphinha, as Farke put it. But playing him will give him the chance to develop and adapt to English football, and the club can then make an informed decision on his future.

Fans will want to see that, and if he doesn't perform, then Farke will be within his rights to stop picking him. But not giving him a chance feels like stubbornness. At this stage, it seems like Leeds will need to choose between the manager and an exciting new style going forward.
