Former Reading FC striker set for lengthy spell out

The 28-year-old picked up the injury during Wrexham's 1-0 Championship defeat to Sheffield United on Friday and now faces an anxious wait to discover the full extent of the damage.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson admitted the club fear Smith could require surgery, with the striker due to see a specialist for further assessment.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday night's clash with Championship leaders Middlesbrough, Parkinson said: "Unfortunately for Sam, it looks like he's going to face a significant period on the sidelines.

"He came off against Sheffield United and went back on and carried on, but his knee swelled up significantly the next day.

"He sees a specialist this afternoon and we will know more then.

"Our initial thoughts are that he could need surgery, but we'll know more after today."

The setback is a blow for Smith, who joined Reading's academy at the age of eight and went on to a total with 29 goals across just under 80 appearances having made his debut back in 2017 across two spells at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

After leaving Reading permanently for Wrexham in January 2025, Smith helped the Welsh side secure promotion to the Championship and has continued to play a key role this season.

His injury also adds to Wrexham's growing list of attacking absentees. Josh Windass and Nathan Broadhead remain sidelined, while Callum O'Hare is a doubt for the visit of Middlesbrough.

The injury could open the door for former Sheffield Wednesday forward Bailey Cadamarteri, who is yet to start a senior match for the Dragons after arriving in January.

Parkinson added: "That's what happens in football clubs, people come out of the side and other people say, 'this is my chance to step up to the plate and show what I'm all about'.

"Undoubtedly Bailey's going to get some game time and I'm looking forward to seeing that.

"Bailey's ready and chomping at the bit and with Sam's injury he's going to get an opportunity and more game time. He's trained well and he's ready."
