In the annals of Premier League transfer history, few ‘what if’ scenarios trigger as much intrigue as Tottenham Hotspur’s near-miss with Eden Hazard. Long before the Belgian winger established himself as one of the world’s premier attacking talents, former Spurs head coach Harry Redknapp had orchestrated a deal to bring the Lille prodigy to White Hart Lane.
Speaking about the agonizing transfer collapse, as shared by The Spurs Watch on X, Redknapp disclosed how close Tottenham came to securing Hazard’s signature before financial hesitation from chairman Daniel Levy scuppered the move.
“Well, I met Eden Hazard. Joe Cole rang me. He was at Lille, and he said, ‘I’m playing with the best player I’ve ever played with.'”
Redknapp recalled that former England international Joe Cole, who spent the 2011/12 campaign on loan at Lille alongside Hazard, was the driving catalyst behind Tottenham’s pursuit. Blown away by Cole’s glowing reference, Redknapp personally traveled to France across back-to-back weekends to scout the young winger in person.
Following those scouting trips, Redknapp set up a private meeting to finalize the winger’s personal enthusiasm for joining Tottenham.
“I went over and watched him, went back again the week after, and met him in a hotel room with his agent, and he wanted to come. But at the time, Daniel didn’t want to spend the money on him. I think it was about £18 million.”

Levy’s reluctance to sanction the £18 million transfer fee proved to be a fateful crossroads. Hazard remained at Lille for another season before eventually securing a move to rival Chelsea, where he won two Premier League titles, two Europa League trophies, and an FA Cup before completing a blockbuster move to Real Madrid.
For Tottenham supporters, Redknapp’s admission underscores the frustrating financial conservatism that occasionally hampered the club during key developmental windows. While Roberto De Zerbi’s current Spurs outfit operates with modern ambition, evidenced by landmark away victories over Chelsea and a heavy summer transfer spend, the revelation of passing on Hazard for just £18 million remains one of N17’s most haunting transfer tales.
