Alan Brazil Switches Off Celtic Humiliation – But Who Is Really to Blame?
Alan Brazil Switches Off Celtic Humiliation – But Who Is Really to Blame?

The talkSPORT host could not bear to watch Celtic’s latest European collapse, exposing a deeper crisis that the Parkhead hierarchy cannot ignore.

Alan Brazil‘s reaction to Celtic’s latest European humiliation should send a shiver through everyone occupying a position of power at Celtic Park.

The former Scotland international and lifelong Celtic supporter admitted on talkSPORT that he could not stomach watching the remainder of Thursday night’s 4-1 defeat to Benfica.

“I went to bed at half-time. I thought, I can’t watch this.”

Three goals down. Another European contest effectively finished before the interval. And another passionate Celtic man deciding he had seen enough.

That should alarm the people running this football club.

When Celtic Supporters Stop Watching, Something Is Seriously Wrong

There was a time when European nights represented everything special about Celtic. The anticipation, the atmosphere, the belief that even Europe’s finest could be challenged.

Now we have reached the extraordinary situation where supporters are switching off through sheer frustration.

Dean Saunders compounded the embarrassment by suggesting Benfica looked like a Premier League side playing League One opposition.

It was a brutal comparison. Unfortunately, Celtic’s first-half performance offered precious little evidence to challenge it.

This is not simply about losing to superior opposition. There is no disgrace in losing to Benfica.

The disgrace lies in how routinely Celtic appear overwhelmed, underprepared and incapable of competing.

The Celtic Board Cannot Escape Responsibility

I keep returning to one fundamental question.

How can a club with Celtic’s support, financial resources and European heritage have allowed expectations to deteriorate so dramatically?

Dermot Desmond and the Celtic hierarchy cannot continually celebrate domestic success while treating repeated European failure as an unavoidable consequence of modern football.

Recruitment, squad development and long-term planning are executive responsibilities.

Martin O’Neill must answer questions about his selections and tactics. But the manager does not operate in isolation. The squad he inherits reflects decisions made long before Thursday night’s kick-off.

That distinction matters.

Alan Brazil Has Exposed Something Far More Damaging

What troubles me most is not that Celtic lost 4-1.

It is the growing acceptance that performances like this are somehow inevitable.

Celtic supporters are not demanding European trophies every season. They are demanding competence, ambition and a team capable of competing with dignity.

Those are hardly unreasonable expectations.

Alan Brazil going to bed at half-time might initially sound like a throwaway radio remark.

I see something considerably more serious.

When even committed Celtic supporters cannot bear to watch their team in Europe, the greatest danger is no longer simply humiliation.

It is indifference.

And if Dermot Desmond and the board cannot recognise that warning, perhaps they have become even more detached from Celtic’s supporters than we feared.
