Ally McCoist has been there, done that, and Ibrox Noise was speaking to him about his views of where Rangers are under the 49ers.
Did Rangers’ former manager and striker believe the new ownership are the correct regime, and where do Rangers feel to Ally that they are? Are the club under the right hands or does Ally think there was any issue higher up with the board and hierarchy?
We asked him how he was feeling about the club’s structure these days? The 49ers, Cavenagh, Gillespie. Do he feel Rangers truly are in the right hands now?
“How are Rangers off the pitch? You look at Manchester United and Manchester City, and clearly they’ve got massive issues going on off the pitch. Rangers don’t have that at the moment.
“The one thing particularly with most clubs, but certainly Rangers, generally speaking, if things are going well on the pitch, then they’ll be going well off the pitch.
“If you can get that balance on the pitch, then things off the pitch tend to look after themselves. And that looks to be the case at the moment. The fan base are a lot happier.”
It’s hard to disagree in some senses. Ibrox Noise has long compared Rangers’ situation with that of Manchester United, who lost their way in 2013, only one year later than Rangers.
The UKs biggest two clubs suffering a painful fall from legacy at around the same time.
And Ally thinks that Utd and City are examples of how Rangers fans can be grateful that off the pitch, things are much better in Govan than they are at Old Trafford or the Ettihad.
Of course, that does not mean everything at Ibrox is suddenly perfect. Far from it. The 49ers still have plenty to prove, while Andrew Cavenagh and Jim Gillespie must continue delivering genuine progress.
However, McCoist clearly sees reasons for optimism, particularly compared with the chaos Rangers supporters endured under previous regimes.
Ultimately, the real measure of this ownership will come through trophies, sustained success and restoring Rangers to the summit of Scottish football.
Nevertheless, Ally’s comments suggest the foundations finally look considerably stronger and Rangers for Ally McCoist look better.
For a club which has endured so much instability, that alone represents a welcome change, even if the hardest work still lies ahead.
