Kasper Hogh’s slow start at Celtic has been one of the bigger talking points around Martin O’Neill’s attacking options.
That was made even more noticeable on Sunday when Celtic thrashed Hearts 7-1 with Hogh out of the starting XI. Camilo Duran played through the middle, Callum Osmand scored twice on his first start, and Haissem Hassan gave Celtic real pace and width.

Hogh did come off the bench and set up Benjamin Nygren for Celtic’s seventh, but he is still looking for the goal that properly settles him.
Now Steffen Stenersen, who knows the Bodo/Glimt scene well, has offered some context around why Hogh may need time.
Speaking to Bold, he said: “Most key players who have left [Bodo/Glimt] have not worked. Hogh is the obvious example now. It immediately has something to do with the fact that they play in a system that they know very well, which they have played in for many years, and which has been set up around them as key players.
“There’s no reason to believe that these players wouldn’t be able to function in foreign football. But there’s something strange about it. There absolutely is.
“He was an important piece in Bodo/Glimt, and he remained so in the end. But he also struggled quite a bit in the beginning. So it’s not unnatural that it takes him a while at Celtic.
“He may be the type who needs time to adapt to new environments. I’m not surprised that he hasn’t taken off right away. It hasn’t been a straight line for Hogh in Bodo/Glimt.
“It could be a danger for other clubs to see that they have been out before and that they don’t work when they come out of Glimt. But at the same time, when they perform like that, it’s too simple to say that it doesn’t work with the Glimt players.”
Celtic have not signed a player who suddenly forgot how to play. They have signed a striker who was part of a very specific football environment and is now having to adjust to a different club, different pressure and a different attacking style.
The problem for Hogh is that Celtic do not allow much breathing space.
Hogh will know the chance has to come soon.
The assist against Hearts was a useful moment, but Celtic need more from him in the box. Stenersen’s comments give him some breathing room, but the competition in front of him is now moving quickly.
