Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams have been one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL to start the season. They entered the season as heavy Super Bowl favorites, after acquiring reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett and two-time All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie in a pair of trades, and adding future Hall of Fame defensive tackle Aaron Donald out of retirement back into the fold.
Los Angeles lost a tough NFC Championship Game following the 2025 season to the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. The additions to an already talented roster were believed to be what would put them over the top, as many referred to them as a super-team; however, the team sits at 2-4 after six weeks and needs to wake up fast to get back in the playoff picture.
If they don’t turn things around quickly, there will be lots of question marks for this team for both this season and the future.
After the Rams suffered the biggest upset loss of the season by point spread at home against the Arizona Cardinals, questions about the team’s outlook are piling up.
“This Rams thing is an epic failure. You can’t beat the Arizona Cardinals at home,” asked John Middlekauff. “Does he [McVay] want this grind? Does he want to transition from Stafford to Ty Simpson, who can’t even win the backup job? If that starts going, you have to start wondering if he bounces to Amazon. I think that is definitely in play right now.”
This is not the first time McVay has been linked to retiring early to take a lucrative television analyst role at Amazon.
However, the Rams’ continued struggles in 2026 would only make those speculations continue to pick up steam. This would leave the Rams in a tough position for 2027 and beyond if it were to happen.
“If McVay were to leave, the Rams would be ultra [expletive],” Middlekauff added. “You think they’re in trouble now, which they are; remove him. Godspeed finding anybody.”
“What a season from hell for the Rams so far,” said Middlekauff.
Matthew Stafford is 38 years old and has been linked to retirement before; the Rams used the No. 13 overall pick, a first-rounder acquired from Atlanta in a 2025 draft-day trade, to select Ty Simpson; Aaron Donald and Davante Adams are both getting older; and Puka Nacua is not under contract for 2027.
McVay leaving for television could spark a domino effect that would not be ideal for Los Angeles, and could make the team look very different just a year from now.
What makes this scenario more plausible is Amazon’s apparent interest in adding McVay to its Thursday Night Football broadcast. Despite signing Kirk Herbstreit to a contract extension, “the deal contains outs for potential Sean McVay run,” said Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, signaling that Amazon remains interested in keeping the door open for McVay.
This remains just speculation, and as was proven the last time this speculation existed, McVay stayed, and the Rams were totally fine, making the postseason in each of the next three seasons.
It is still early in the season, and Los Angeles could turn things around and make a playoff push, even a potentially deep one. They are just 1.5 games behind Detroit for the NFC’s current final Wild Card spot, and despite some injuries, still possess tons of talent that could spark a strong run down the stretch.
McVay and the Rams figure to be one of the top storylines throughout the remainder of the regular season.
Every loss will be placed under a microscope, as is the territory of being a Super Bowl favorite in a big market, but they will look to put these questions to rest and return to the form they have shown they are capable of in each of the past three seasons.
