Why the wide-open AFC gives the 6-2 Steelers a real Super Bowl path

While the Pittsburgh Steelers are currently in first place in the AFC North, making the postseason is far from guaranteed. The national NFL coverage often presents the AFC playoff landscape as a daunting gauntlet; however, the reality across the conference reveals significant flaws among top contenders.

From the Kansas City Chiefs receiver issues to the Buffalo Bills inconsistent defense, no team looks invincible. Sitting at 6–2 at the bye week, the Steelers hold a legitimate path to a deep postseason run if they maximize their physical identity and secure home-field advantage in the early rounds.

Unlike past seasons dominated by undisputed powerhouses, the current conference field remains wide open. As reporter Mark Kaboly noted on “Kaboly and Mack,” the parity across the conference creates a genuine opening for Pittsburgh.

"There's, you know, how every year it's like, boy, you don't want to see them in the playoffs," Kaboly observed. "This year seems like it's going to be like there's nobody in the AFC like, 'Yeah, I want to play them in the playoffs because they stink.' I think all seven of the teams who eventually get in are going to have a chance, a legit chance of making a run. I do. I mean, there's not much difference between 7-1, I don't think, or 7-2."

Co-host Chris Mack echoed that sentiment, emphasizing that Pittsburgh's mix of veteran leadership from Aaron Rodgers and a dominant, smashmouth rushing attack can challenge any opponent in January.

“I can cook up a reasonable path to victory against most teams in the AFC,” said Mack. “Even Buffalo and Kansas City."

If the Steelers maintain their physical ground game and secure key home playoff dates, their path to the AFC Championship Game is far more realistic than skeptics suggest.
