Joe Gomez has jokingly questioned the validity of the decisive penalty that ended his goal drought and earned Liverpool a dramatic Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea.

Gomez scored from the spot before visiting centre-back Wesley Fofana blasted his effort horribly off target as the Reds secured a 6-5 shoot-out triumph after a tense 1-1 draw in their fourth round home clash on Wednesday evening.

It is the first goal of any kind the Liverpool defender has scored in his 319 appearances at club and international level, 280 of which have been during more than 11 years with the Anfield outfit.

And posting on social media after the game with a laughing emoji, Gomez asked "Does that count?" before adding "On to Sunday" with Liverpool hosting Premier League champions Arsenal at the weekend.

While Gomez still technically hasn't scored a senior goal as strikes in a penalty shoot-out don't count towards the tally, there was a universal response to his question.

Team-mate Alexander Isak posted "For sure" while ex-Reds colleague Andy Robertson, now at Tottenham Hotspur, said: "Wanted a knee slide, I'll be honest!"

Gomez also spoke at length after the match to ITV Sport about his penalty, and said: "Everyone's on edge. We want to win and we know we've got the quality. Naturally for me, it's a moment I'm obviously thinking about and anticipating. It was nice that it went in.

"It means everything to play for this club and we know every game, especially here, is massive for us and we want to do our best to represent the shirt.

"Obviously it's a new management team and we want to show that fight, show that grit. It's mentality and I think that's what we're known for and we're always trying to uphold that standard, and I think we did that.

"It was important that the lads kept on fighting, kept going until the end and we did that."
