Stamford Bridge is the venue for this weekend's pulsating Premier League lunchtime kickoff, which pits under-performing Chelsea against crisis club Manchester United.

Both Xabi Alonso and Michael Carrick are at risk of losing three successive games in all tournaments this weekend, but few expected the latter to even make the trip to the capital this weekend.

Match preview

Still backed by a large portion of the Old Trafford faithful - which is more than can be said for the players, INEOS and the Glazer family - Carrick has earned an unforeseen stay of execution as Man United manager amid the Red Devils' declining form.

In the eyes of many, Carrick was bidding farewell to the Theatre of Dreams after last weekend's horror show against Bournemouth, who astonishingly won 3-0 away at Man United for the third time in four seasons to plunge the club into further catastrophe.

Despite now overseeing an eight-game winless run in all tournaments and six-match winless sequence in the top flight - leaving Man Utd 16th in the Premier League table and just one point above the drop zone - Carrick will be given time to turn the Red Devils' fortunes around.

However, the consensus among fans and rivals alike is that neither Carrick nor any potential successor can turn the fortunes of the entire club around; that duty lies with the men above, who have perpetually failed in that regard with numerous names at the helm.

As chaos continues to unfold at boardroom level, Carrick is attempting to finally lead Man United to their first away win of the season at the seventh attempt this weekend, but their measly total of seven points from eight league games this season represents their worst start since all the way back in 1986-87.

Hosts Chelsea may find themselves 11 places and six points better off than Man United in the Premier League rankings, but morale is hardly any higher in West London on the back of successive defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

A Joao Pedro-less Blues side failed to assert their perennial dominance over Spurs at Stamford Bridge, succumbing to a shock 2-0 loss, before their EFL Cup campaign ended prematurely in the fourth round with a penalty-shootout defeat to the Reds at Anfield.

Putting seven past Bournemouth and Everton combined following the international break was ostensibly a false dawn for Chelsea, who have been bumped out of the top four and still hold the dishonour of being the worst defensive team inside the top 10.

In fact, only Crystal Palace (19) and Ipswich Town (16) have let in more goals than Chelsea's 15 in the 2026-27 Premier League, and Alonso's men have conceded an average of two per game at home thus far.

Furthermore, the Blues suffered back-to-back defeats to Man Utd in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, while only winning three of their last 19 head-to-heads in all tournaments, offering the under-fire Carrick a crumb of historical hope.

Team News

The expulsion of Bruno Fernandes from the XI to face Bournemouth naturally dominated the Man Utd headlines last weekend; Carrick stressed that his captain was dropped for "pure football" reasons after he appeared to criticise his manager's tactics in Como.

The pair have reportedly now held clear-the-air talks, and Fernandes should return to the Man Utd side on Saturday, after Carrick revealed in his press conference that the Portuguese remains "fully committed" to the club.

Kobbie Mainoo is also back in training, but Marcus Rashford's availability remains unclear, while Luke Shaw (unspecified), Benjamin Sesko (shin), Manuel Ugarte (knee) and Patrick Dorgu (thigh) are still missing.

On Chelsea's end, all of Maxence Lacroix, Moises Caicedo and Malo Gusto were substituted with issues at Anfield; the latter two should be fine for Saturday, but Lacroix picked up a hamstring problem and will almost certainly sit this one out.

The Frenchman joins Reece James (knee), Pedro (thigh), Emiliano Martinez (jaw) and Jamie Gittens (ankle) in the infirmary, but Pep Chavarria may return from an unspecified injury, and Cole Palmer has served his one-game ban for his senseless red card against Tottenham.

Despite an EFL Cup disasterclass, Wesley Fofana - who gave away one penalty then fatally missed his in the shootout against Liverpool - will step in for Lacroix, while Palmer may be deployed as the false nine after Danny Welbeck's unconvincing display in midweek.

Chelsea possible starting lineup:

Penders; Acheampong, Fofana, Colwill, Hato; Henderson, Lavia, Caicedo; Neto, Palmer, Rogers

Manchester United possible starting lineup:

Lammens; Mazraoui, Maguire, Martinez, Dalot; Santos, Baleba; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Mount; Cunha

We say: Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

With or without Fernandes in the side, Man Utd are sure to generate opportunities against a depleted Chelsea backline, but Carrick's own defensive problems arguably run deeper.

Therefore, expect the Blues to be the ones to respond to their recent setbacks, as the Red Devils' disastrous run continues in the capital.
