One-score games, no breathing room: The NFL's 2026 season

The NFL has always been a parody league. Any team can be beaten on any given Sunday, but this season feels different because of the number of close games. Let's dive into the numbers and see just how many games have gone down to the wire.

With only one game remaining for Week 7, there have been a whopping 64 games decided by one score or fewer this season (eight or fewer points). 59 games have also been decided by seven points or fewer. Both of these are the most through Week 7 in NFL history.

In Week 7, three teams won on the final play of the game. Those teams were the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, and the New York Giants.

There have been 34 games this season with the game-winning score in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter or in overtime, the most through Week 7 in NFL history. This season, 32 games have ended with a game-winning score in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter or in overtime, the most through Week 7 in NFL history.

Also in Week 7, three teams overcame deficits of 10 points or more to win. This season, 20 games have seen a team overcome a 10-point or greater deficit to win, and only three seasons have had more such wins through Week 7.
