Hibs players can take confidence from Celtic performance claims Marink Reedijk

Hibs manager Marink Reedijk believes his players can take confidence from their performance against Celtic ahead of tonight’s trip to Paisley to take on St Mirren.

Despite the narrow defeat, Hibs created several opportunities against the reigning champions, and Reedijk feels the performance offered further evidence of progress within his squad.

Reflecting on the match, the Dutchman said: “When I look back, I see a team with a plan and good intensity.

“The number of chances we had against Celtic – I think there were four or five good opportunities where we could have scored, but we didn’t.

“The fact that we created those chances against that kind of opponent is a good sign because it wasn’t based on luck. It was based on us outplaying them or having a good counter-attack.

“That gives me a good feeling that if we can do this against these kinds of opponents, both defensively and offensively, eventually things will go our way.”

Reedijk also acknowledged the importance of the backing the team received from the Hibs support after Sunday’s game, believing the performance showed the squad is moving in the right direction.

He said: “For me, the reaction after the game on Sunday reflected the fact that we’re going in the right direction. We’re bringing something to the pitch that people can identify with.

“No matter the result, they can see that we’ve made progress. Of course, everybody wants to win. Against Celtic, it’s not an easy game to win, but if you can compete with that team in the way we did, I think that’s a positive sign.”

The Head Coach confirmed that Martin Boyle remains unavailable due to illness, with no players returning to the squad from last week’s selection.

With injuries continuing to affect his options, Reedijk stressed the importance of making the most of the players available to him as Hibs look to build momentum heading into a crucial week for the Football Club.

He added: “So, based on the game last Sunday, Martin (Boyle) went out sick. He’s still sick, so Martin will not be available – hopefully he will be back for Sunday. Furthermore, the situation is the same as last week, so nobody is coming back.

“Sometimes, because we have a few injuries – I think seven, off the top of my head – you need to improvise with the players you have available to try to change the game.

“The positivity within the Club is good. We’ve also shown progress. Again, I’m a believer that the results will come from that.

“Do we need a win and a result? Yes. I understand that. It’s football. But, again, it’s 90 minutes, and anything can happen in 90 minutes.

“You always need to be ready for the next challenge, and I think we are ready for the next challenge.

“For me, it’s about the next 90 minutes – those are the most important.”
