Norwich 0-1 Portsmouth: Paddy Davitt Championship ratings

Daniel Grimshaw 6
Sent the wrong way from the penalty spot by Marezi (Marko Milovanović), but only had one save to make in an otherwise watching brief. Fine reaction stop in the 94th minute to foil Adrian Segecic.

Showed good composure on the floor with his 40 touches. Threaded a pass into Pelle Mattsson to spark a counter in the 35th minute.

Jack Stacey 6

A welcome secure shift up against a dangerous customer in Ryan Kavuma-McQueen. 15 defensive contributions in total, the most of any player on the pitch.

Snapped into an early tackle to release Andre Brooks, who ran up a cul-de-sac. Twice foiled Kavuma-McQueen in the final seconds of the opening period. Usual attacking instincts with five passes made into the final third.

Driven cross aimed at Jovon Makama headed clear by Regan Poole. Cross shot too close to Nicolas Schmid in the 65th minute. Overclubbed when Paris Maghoma picked him out with a reverse ball. Needed help from Ruairi McConville with a goal-saving tackle on Segecic, from the full back's wayward throw in.

Ruairi McConville 7

Hared back to make that crucial sliding challenge, as Segecic raced through with Dan Grimshaw to beat.

Foiled the same player in the closing seconds. Eight defensive contributions in total only bettered by his central defensive partner.

Just like for his country a threat on attacking set pieces. Met a deep Jacob Wright corner on the volley but slice claimed by Schmid.

Long range smack at the keeper, who gathered at the second attempt. Got the wrong side of Jayden Meghoma for a sharp turnover on the edge of the Portsmouth box, but Anis Ben Slimane dragged his shot at Schmid.

Jose Cordoba 7

Much more like the dominant defender so highly rated by Philippe Clement that was a key figure in last season’s revival. 78pc passing accuracy, with 59 successful passes a match high.

The pick his cool clip into Mattsson in central midfield as Pompey tried to press high.
Among his ten defensive contributions was a key interception to halt Segecic after Abu Kamara ran in behind Ben Chrisene.

Took a whack from Marezi when Chrisene was beaten again in the 40th minute, and the Panamanian international had to throw his body in the way of the shot.

Ben Chrisene 4

Found it tough going trying to prevent Kamara getting on the outside of the City left back.
Needed Jose Cordoba to screen at his near post twice in the opening half.

Fed a ball around the corner for Oscar Schwartau to barrel his way into the box, but the ball ran out of play. Hooked at the interval for Darlin Yongwa.

Jacob Wright 5

A fraction of a second too slow to sense the danger when Kamara appeared on his blindside before clipping the attacker who went down to concede a penalty.

By his standards passing accuracy was a touch frayed. 73pc pass completion, but only connected with four out of ten of his long balls.

Led the way with passes into the final third for the hosts. Second most touches of any home player.

Couple of tempting second half free kicks veered across the six yard box without any takers.
Connected with McConville in the 18th minute but the Northern Irishman miscued his volley.

Pop passing with Oscar Schwartau and Yongwa picked out Lucien Mahovo, who slashed wide.

Pelle Mattsson (C) 6

What bad luck to see his 20 yard strike beat the sprawling Schmid but cannon off the base of his right hand post and rebound into play.

80pc pass completion rate. Out swiftly to block from Segecic in the ninth minute.

Lovely pluck out of the sky from Jayden Meghoma’s misdirected header before rolling in Mathias Kvistgaarden, who slipped at impact to rifle into the side netting.

Andre Brooks 4

Ineffective yet again. A total of 23 touches in his 57-minute outing tells you how limited his effectiveness was.

Replaced, at least initially down the Norwich right, by left back by trade Mahovo.

No creative sparks with Jack Stacey but did get back to scythe down Kavuma-McQueen in the 14th minute.

Dallied in his own defensive third in the 36th minute when he was converged on for a turnover, but Kavuma-McQueen skied over.

Anis Ben Slimane 4

A total of three touches in the Portsmouth box for a player who should be Norwich’s creator-in-chief in that central role behind Jovon Makama.

Turned and advanced in the 42nd minute with space and time but fired well over from 25 yards after Mattsson’s set.

Then another unconvincing drag at Schmid from McConville’s retrieval work.

Oscar Schwartau 4

Had a chance to clear his lines but was turned over in the build up to Portsmouth’s penalty.
Looked leggy and another limited presence in wider areas going the other way. Had the lowest pass completion rate for the hosts. Only one out of three successful dribbles.

Overran Chrisene’s early pass into the box. Combined with Yongwa for Wright to pick out Mahovo.

Jovon Makama 5

Must be afforded some leeway given Clement had indicated on Friday if the fit-again striker started he would not be able to last the course. But completed his first 90 minutes in seven months.

Slapped over from Mahovo’s cut back, and then a slashing cross shot flew wide in the 65th minute.

Only four touches in the opposition box and 18 in total, the lowest of any Norwich starter.

Subs:
Darlin Yongwa
(for Chrisene, 45) 5

Got a late booking for trying to halt a Pompey counter. Finished the game with Mahovo in front, which could well be a sign of things to come in the shorter term.

Cut a ball back that eventually landed at Mahovo, who carved wide. Six defensive contributions.

Lucien Mahovo (for Brooks, 57) 6

Deployed in an unaccustomed right wing role and then later switched to the left.
But appeared to relish his cameo.

Burst down the right in the 58th minute and the cut back was slammed over by Makama.
Then showed a lack of composure when Wright found him in a clear shooting position on the right of the penalty box.

Paris Maghoma (for Slimane, 57) 5

A total of 16 touches in 33 minutes. Did square an early ball for Mattsson to slam his shot against the foot of a post.

Seconds earlier reversed a ball out to Stacey, who sliced his intended cross. Tried to find the right back from a more acute angle in the 86th minute and the ball rolled out of play.

Mathias Kvistgaarden (for Schwartau, 73) 5

Interesting introduction in close proximity to Makama in the second striker support role.
Fought for the ball to release Mattsson, but Stacey opted to cut back inside and Pompey smothered the threat.

Linked with Paris Maghoma for Mattsson’s big chance. Falling backwards clipped a rising shot into the side netting.
