Jordan Travis discusses why he takes 'blame' in FSU's firing of Mike Norvell

Florida State made a head coaching change heading into Week 10 with Mike Norvell's firing after seven seasons following a third consecutive loss in ACC play.

It is a coaching change that former Seminoles quarterback Jordan Travis believes he "holds some weight" for and believes wouldn't have happened if it weren't for his season-altering injury in 2023.

"This is something that you're not going to agree with, but it sits on me a little bit heavy," Travis said on his podcast "Travis Take Two" alongside his brother, former MLB player Devon Travis. "… Obviously, that '23 season, me breaking my leg. If I don't break my leg, Mike Norvell is still at Florida State, I believe."

The Seminoles' 2023 season marked the high point of Norvell's tenure at Florida State. The Seminoles went into their Nov. 18 matchup against North Alabama sitting at 10-0 on the season but lost Travis in the first quarter to an eventual season-ending injury.

Florida State went on to win out the regular season, including the ACC championship game, but it would ultimately be left out of the then-four-team College Football Playoff field by the selection committee despite its undefeated record, citing Travis' injury in the decision.

"I believe that we compete for national championships for the next few years, these past few years and the records are completely different. If we go to the playoffs that year and go to the championship, we have a lot more money here at Florida State and a lot more attention," Travis added.

"So I carry a lot of weight of that. So that always sucks. And you know how I am, I'm always going to take the blame for things like that, but it sucks. It's very, very true. If my leg does not break, Mike Norvell would still be at Florida State, I believe."

The Seminoles, instead, went 10-22 overall under Norvell since the 2023 season. He finished his Florida State tenure with a 41-39 record, 23-30 record in ACC play. Norvell is owed a buyout of roughly $50 million from Florida State, though there's offset language in his contract that can lower that amount to what the school has to pay him should he get a new job elsewhere.

Florida State will look to snap its three-game skid at noon ET on Saturday, Nov. 7 on the road at Boston College with former Seminoles quarterback Rick Stockstill serving as the program's interim head coach.
