Tottenham‘s Under-21s came from behind to beat Middlesbrough 2-1 in Premier League 2 on Sunday, with Elisha Sowunmi scoring in the third minute of stoppage time. The game was played at Boro’s Rockliffe Park training centre after being moved forward a day from Monday, and Storm Boelo, the second named storm of the season after Austen, made conditions awkward.
Boro led on 16 minutes. A free kick from the right was met by James Wilson, who nodded into an empty net after goalkeeper Samuel Archer came for it and missed out. Spurs had the wind against them in the first half and went in a goal down.
The turnaround started just after the hour. Reiss Elliott-Parris dribbled from his own half into the Boro box before being brought down, and Tyrese Hall sent the penalty into the corner on 61 minutes. Boro’s Jaydon Carbon had a late chance to win it but flashed wide. Sowunmi, who had come on in the 66th minute, then curled a shot in from the edge of the area to win it.
Sowunmi’s first Under-21s goal came a week earlier, on October 18. He scored in the 77th minute in a 2-0 win over Leicester City at Hotspur Way, after Hall had opened the scoring just past the hour. Both of his goals have followed one from Hall, and the forward, who joined from West Ham in January, now has two for the club.
Spurs stay top of Premier League 2 and remain unbeaten this season.
