Tottenham Hotspur finally ended their six-game winless run in the Premier League on Monday evening by beating Coventry City 3-1.
James Maddison marked his start since May 2025 with a fantastic goal, before Jack Rudoni’s equaliser had the home fans worried. But goals from Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies finally earned Roberto De Zerbi’s side a Premier League win for the first time since the final day of last season when we beat Everton 1-0 and clinched top-flight safety.
There were several strong individual performances from Tottenham players. However, there were few on the negative front as well, and one of those was the failure to keep a clean sheet. Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky produced a weak attempt when trying to keep Jack Rudoni’s close-range effort. The overall Spurs defence looked shaky and got carved open a fair few times on the break.
The North Londoners added to their defensive unit as part of their major squad rebuild in the summer. Four new faces walked into the club to strengthen that position, yet De Zerbi’s side haven’t convinced defensively thus far. As a result, the N17 bosses are keeping tabs on a talented La Liga defender.
According to German outlet Fussball News, Tottenham are among several top European clubs monitoring Barcelona defender Gerard Martin. Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Liverpool and Chelsea are all interested in the player.
The 2024/25 season turned out to be Gerard Martin’s breakout season at Barcelona. He made 42 appearances in all competitions, scoring a goal. The Spaniard became a key member of Hansi Flick’s squad last season, racking up 51 appearances as Barcelona won the La Liga and the Supercopa de España. And he has begun the new campaign strongly, helping Barcelona enjoy a flawless start in La Liga.
A versatile left-footed defender, the Spaniard has transitioned from a natural left-back into a reliable left-sided centre-back under Hansi Flick. Recognised for his calm demeanour, strong concentration, and solid positional discipline rather than explosive speed, Martin has slowly but steadily grown into a reliable defender in La Liga.

Thus, convincing the Catalan giants to part ways with their versatile defensive star will not be simple. Martin remains under contract until June 2028, and Barcelona are considering extending his deal until 2030 or 2031. The report adds that the former Spanish Under-21 international’s current release clause is believed to be €100 million, although Blaugrana could enter negotiations if they are offered in the region of €55 million to €60 million.
Tottenham remain determined to invest in defence again, but Barcelona’s stance on Martin could complicate negotiations. Plus, the presence of top European clubs in the race puts Spurs at a big disadvantage. With the January window approaching, De Zerbi’s club may need to act decisively to secure an agreement for the 24-year-old before rivals intensify their interest.
