Workington stars help Scotland to 54-0 rugby league win

Workington Town Ladies players Evie Tonkin and Kacey Currie featured in Scotland Women’s 54-0 win over the Netherlands in Castricum, a result made even more impressive by the fact that the Dutch were ranked one place above Scotland going into the match.

Tonkin, who plays at centre, scored two tries in a dominant performance, while 18-year-old full-back Currie was also part of the squad.

Workington Town Ladies head coach Gareth Nicholson travelled with the team as assistant coach.

Mr Nicholson said: "Evie has pace to burn and is capable of scoring from anywhere on the pitch.

"Young Kacey has done amazing for her age and has progressed since making her international debut in the summer against Canada."

Scotland led 38-0 at half-time and ran in 10 tries overall, with full-back Becky Smart notching a hat-trick.

Tonkin, a dual international who has also represented Scotland in rugby union, was among the other try scorers.

The result was Scotland’s biggest win of the year and capped off a memorable season for the Workington Town Ladies duo.

Both players recently helped their club secure promotion to the Championship with a final-day win at Wakefield.

Mr Nicholson is now turning his attention to the upcoming club season.

He plans to start pre-season training in December and is looking to add some experienced players to the squad.

The club’s Championship campaign is expected to begin in late March or early April.
