Alexander Volkanovski’s coach expects to have a huge edge over ‘The Highlight’.

Talk of a super fight between the lightweight and featherweight champions has increased after the latter’s impressive performance at UFC 333 on Saturday.

In the main event of the promotion’s latest card at the Etihad Arena, Volkanovski knocked out Movsar Evloev in round two to continue his second reign on the 145-pound throne.

The Australian outlined his desire to fight Justin Gaethje ahead of his triumph in the Middle East, and his team is confident they could get the better of the American if the UFC puts the superfight together.

Alexander Volkanovski’s coach insists the UFC featherweight champion would be too smart for Justin Gaethje

It has been suggested that ‘Alexander the Great’ could voluntarily give up his featherweight title to pursue a possible double retirement fight with Gaethje up at 155 pounds.

‘The Highlight’ has been pondering calling it quits ever since realizing his undisputed title dreams at the White House this past June, where Gaethje finished Ilia Topuria to become champ.

If the prospect of fighting a fellow legend in Volkanovski is enough to convince Gaethje to return, the Aussie’s coach, Joe Lopez, believes his man will have a clear fight IQ edge over the American inside the cage.

“Justin hits like a truck as well, and he’s got the wrestling,” Lopez said during an appearance on Submission Radio.

“But he’s been beaten, and I think Volk would beat him. I think Volk’s fight IQ would be a little bit too much for Justin.

“Even though Justin’s also got Trevor Wittman and those guys…probably one of the other great teams out there,” he continued. “Look what he did to Ilia, you know?

“You can never underestimate him. It would be an interesting one, and a great last hurrah for both boys.”

Dana White could grant Volkanovski his wish, having publicly supported his pitch to fight Gaethje both before and after the featherweight king took Evloev’s ‘0’ on October 24.
