Ardrossan Winton Rovers earn progress in Scottish Junior Cup

The Three Towns outfit ended a four-match losing streak on Saturday as they earned a place in the Scottish Junior Cup fourth round.

Winton were 4-2 winners away to Carluke Rovers as they avoided a shock at the hands of the WoSFL Third Division side.

In a rollercoaster tie, it was Carluke who took the lead before Ewan McIver levelled for Winton and Harvey Gilmour put the visitors ahead at the break.

The hosts managed to draw level again heading into the final 20 minutes though a second for McIver coupled with a Thomas Miller strike put the game to bed.

“We deserved to go through," McInally commented. "We were the better team, they were just hard to put away. They were one of those hard, dogged, teams who just stuck in the game.

“Thankfully we are through to the next round and that’s what it’s about, making sure we got there, and we did.

“It’s undeniable, we’re not one of the biggest teams in the trophy but we are still there in the West and the Scottish.

“Establishing ourselves as a Premier Division club is the number one thing for us, then trying to go as deep as possible in cups.”

McInally believes that the victory was coming despite his side falling to defeat in recent weeks.

He added: “The last few weeks we’ve actually played really well in games, we should have beat Arthurlie and we should have taken something from Kilbirnie.

“But there were circumstances there, Arthurlie we missed three sitters, we should have been in front.

“Against Kilbirnie we were one up until we got our captain sent off, that had an influence and baring on the game towards the end.

“I wasn’t too disheartened with how we played but that’s just how football works sometimes.

“It goes against you for a spell, you just keep the faith and you need to come out the other end a better team.”

The Winton boss is hoping his side can now kick on as they prepare to host Irvine Meadow in the WoSFL Premier Division on October 24.

He continued: “Irvine Meadow is just another challenge for us, a promoted team, they've been going pretty well but they've had bumps in the road.

“It will be a good game, a competitive game, it's two good teams who try to play the right way.

“The good thing, from my point of view, is there is only one [player] not available to me, I’m getting a fit and healthy squad back.

“We’re hopeful that we are getting our players back and we’ve got a good, competitive squad again.

“That only bodes well for us because we’ll have more players available, good players at that, experienced players and talented players – until recently we’ve been working of a squad of 14 or 15.”
